The Treaty of Windsor dates to 1386, but it was preceded by the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of 1373.

Re: Housing vs. Short Term Rentals in Portugal

Yes, while that article was focused on the hostel thing, I think the implications will be interesting across the board. What really surprised me about this was the magnitude of the step taken given that it hasn't been all that long since the last regulations were passed. Portugal already passed laws...

Housing vs. Short Term Rentals in Portugal

Well, a new law awaiting Presidential approval looks to shake things up: https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/portugal-housing-law-hostels/index.html It will really be interesting to see what happens to costs (if) when this goes through. It might make for prime conditions to buy something if you aren'...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

I was monitoring that one for a few weeks, but wasn't sure I wanted a magnum I wouldn't open for a while. I'm glad it went to a good home, was tremendous deal. According to Roy's forecast, there is only 48 of them! Awesome pickup. Yes, it was hard to pass up at that price. I see a magnum dinner in ...

Two 2020 wines from Soalheiro. The Alvarinho was very good, the Granit excellent (for white wines).

Visiting my parents, we picked up a 2016 Taylor LBV and opened it to go with a dark chocolate dessert. Very nice wine, and a good pairing.

Re: Is TCA in corks going down?

True, but a winery infection is rarer than a cork infection, and typically is a byproduct of an earlier cork infection. So Amorim's TCA-free corks should go a long way toward eliminating this scourge and my superpower will be far less useful. Agreed. I wonder what percent happens at the winer...

Re: Is TCA in corks going down?

Perhaps more importantly, in 2021, Amorim, the world’s largest supplier of closures, announced that it had added a step to its production that would eliminate cork taint from all of its corks.
Even if a cork leaves Amorim free of TCA, that doesn't guarantee that it can't be introduced at the winery.

Re: 1994 VP Horizontal Tasting

I know that storage etc. impacts any individual bottle, but it still never fails to surprise me at the diversity of scores. No one is wrong with the scores because the factors involved in the quality of any one bottle are innumerable. And personal taste is an issue. In many blind tastings I regular...

1994 VP Horizontal Tasting

Memorial Day weekend I hosted several dinners at my home along with nine other FTLOPers and people I've met on Roy's tours. I've hosted 12 people before, but 10 works a bit better in my dining room, and that gives everyone a nice pour of Port. On Saturday we tasted 1994 Ports . These were tasted bli...

Yes, I found it pretty light on details. But any cool Port story in a non-Port media I'll appreciate, in particular when it doesn't have inaccuracies that make me cringe.

Ahh, that public transport makes some of the Colares wineries a little difficult, but the Coopertivo may be an option, depending on the state of the roof: https://arcolares.com/en/ And then there is Carcavelos: https://www.villaoeiras.com/PT I took the train out, and then had to get a ride to the wi...

Whoa, a "last again" 1927 Niepoort? https://www.winespectator.com/articles/the-last-bottle-on-earth-41686  Around 2003 I made my own wine from concentrated Carménère from Chile's Maipo Valley. I opened the last bottle on Saturday. I'll venture to guess that was more of a Last Bottle ...

But isn't that bouncing around the surface of the sea, subject to daily temperature fluctuations and shaking? That's a lot different than next to Davy Jones's locker.

Re: Durand-style Openers

I probably would use my Durand more if it had a slightly longer worm. ... I recently encountered a cork that not even a Durand could save. It just disintegrated into sawdust as I tried the usual twist-and-pull method of removing with a Durand. But corks like that are rare! I have the Durand with th...
