Re: What have you opened this week?
I was able to compare all the 2019 release from Noval, the wines are evolving nicely compared to when I last tasted them in summer 2021. The Noval's are really elegant with great lenght of aromatics and fine tannins while the Passadouro is more open and generous at the moment but definitively shorte...

Re: Tawny’s True Age Under Fire
I thought it was interesting to share. On the back label of a 10 years old Moscatel de Setubal from Jose Maria de Fonseca, here is what we can read :
''...is a blend of more than one Vintage where the youngest one is at least 10 years old...''

Re: Tawny’s True Age Under Fire
Andy, I know you can buy stocks and sell on the 1st year, but my example was within your own production, just to point out that IVDP still cares about the age of your stocks to produce a Tawny with indication of age. This is also why they just created the new categories of 50 year old and Very Old T...

Re: Tawny’s True Age Under Fire
Come on Glenn! We all know(consumers and producers) that when the category got created and named 10 year(s) old Tawny, it was not intended to sell 2,5 years old Port. It was intended to sell Port that tastes like it is 10 years old. I mean, it would have been trivial to write the law to require it ...

Re: Tawny’s True Age Under Fire
A few interesting points worth replying or mentionning... - Until the 60's Tawny with indication of age did not exist. It was a brand and you had to know which brand from each company was more or less what you were looking for. Some companies keep those brand, a quick example, Burmester 40 years old...

Re: Tawny’s True Age Under Fire
Over the last few days, I can tell you that this investigation has caused a lot of noise around the Port trade. Some interesting points worth mentionning. -There will be a more detailed article that will be published. It will include the list of all the Port producers tested and the result insted of...

Re: Tawny’s True Age Under Fire
It is very interesting! I never thought it would be such a strectch! It was common knowledge that indication of age Tawny was not a precise science and it was more a reflect of a style of a house in a specific category. I would not have been surprised if someone told me their 10 year old Tawny was a...

Re: 07-08-09 Guide
Quevedo's 2008 Vale D'Agodinho is one of my favorite, I love the single expression of this Quinta, so unique. It has digested some of its tannins but it remains mainly on the primary fruit character at the moment. I had Niepoort Bioma 2008 last week end, this is such a baby as well, well balanced lo...

Re: The Best Port you've opened or tasted during 2021
Cough Cough, title says best Port you have opened... not tasted :) Also it is singular, not plurial.... I'd have to go with a pristine bottle of Warre's 1980, I've been a big fan of this Port lately. A Burmester 20 year old bottled in 1989 proved to be quite high on the list too, loved those bottle ...

Re: The BEST Portuguese Table Wine you've opened or tasted during 2021?
I was really impressed with Niepoort Lote D Bairrada 2014 Niepoort Turris Douro 2012 was also quite spectacular and so young! Runner up Luis Seabra Indie 2018, everything from him in 2018 is really amazing Carlos Raposo D&V 2019, what a long finish on this white wine, can't wait to see how it ag...

Re: Irrigation allowed?
Irrigation is allowed in the first years for a new plantation, is it 3 years like Glenn mentions, 4, or maybe 5? I've heard those numbers from different producers. 2-3 years ago, IVDP gave some loose in the law for irrigation. In exceptionnally dry weather, producers could ask for the right to irrig...

Re: New Port Category in 2022... Drum Roll
Looks like I am the only one who'd like to see a regional Appellation like Burgundy. Although a general and respected regional appellation is not going to happen tomorrow. One producer will release next year some Douro wines from different region of the Douro. You'll be able to buy the same brand f...

Re: New Port Category in 2022... Drum Roll
I had the same reaction when I read it. Maybe the journalist made a mistake. It would make no sense. A Porto Nouveau would make things complicated, especially with the law of third. Douro needs to work on quality recognition. It is unthinkable that this region, having yields 3-4 times lower than mos...

Re: New Port Category in 2022... Drum Roll
We already know that the 50 Year Old Tawny and Muito Velho (i.e. 80+ Years Old) categories have been approved by the IVDP and are only awaiting the necessary legislation, so that seems like the obvious answer. I'd like to see either Vintage White (which would require a re-write of the Vintage Port ...

I'm having NIepoort LBV 2017, quite nice, one of the best I had from them in quite a while, returning to the full bodied style.
