Re: 1970 Fonseca Vintage Port

I actually don't have any Roy. This was a friend's bottle that he opened at a luncheon. I thought it pretty good, given the aeration time.

Updated the list to show Roy Hersh attending with a Smith Woodhouse. We're at 12 right now, so there's 4 spots remaining in case anyone can make it.

I've also updated the first post with the logistics of the tasting. Please let me know if you can attend. I...

NV Churchill/Graham Porto Crusted - Portugal, Douro, Porto (9/10/2017) Bottled in 1986. This bottle was a leaker. Upon decanting, the color was light reddish brown. The palate was sweet, with a bit of alcohol heat. Three and a half hours later, the color hasn't changed. The palate is less sweet and ...

My notes show flavors of walnuts, caramel, moderate acid. It reminds me of liquid fruitcake, but without those gawd-awful candied cherries.

I'm in Glenn's boat. Besides those listed, I have Croft, Gould Campbell, and Smith Woodhouse. Hi Eric, I've created a "May attend" list, putting you and Glenn on it. I hope you can make it. If we get close to the 16 total, I'll reach out to you to see if you can confirm your attendance. I...

Hi John, I'd like to reserve a spot. I won't know for sure until closer to the date whether or not I can take a day off to fly to Chicago, but I think it's likely. I can bring a Quarles Harris. I might also have a Dow, but I'll have to dig around in my fridges to find out for sure. Hi Glenn, I've a...

TN: NV Justino's Madeira Verdelho 10 Years Old

NV Justino's Madeira Verdelho 10 Years Old - Portugal, Madeira (6/24/2017) Much sweeter than a Verdelho should be. I'm much more used to a drier style of Verdelho, such as the Henriques & Henriques 10-year or 15-year. More like a Bual, but not quite. Decent palate with the sweetness balanced ou...

1970 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (4/14/2017) Decanted 7 hours before service. Purchased recently. Oddly, this wine was disappointing, yet successful this evening. The disappointing part was the wine itself. The color was light brick red, far to light for this producer a...

1992 Vinhos Oscar Quevedo Colheita Port

1992 Vinhos Oscar Quevedo Porto Colheita - Portugal, Douro, Porto (1/27/2017) I just poured a glass using my Pungo (like a Coravin). The wine still has a fair amount of red for a 20+ year colheita. Nice sweetness with good acidity, with some dryness on the finish that reminds me of Dow. This comes ...

Re: LBV questions (Dow's 2011 LBV in particular)

Andy, I believe you're considering "ageing" and "getting better" as the same thing. They're not. Ageing is exactly that, the act of getting older and changing however it changes. That's an act of science and there isn't any level of filtration that can prevent that. All red wine ...

Re: LBV questions (Dow's 2011 LBV in particular)

Filtered LBV's won't improve with age. They are made in a way that will including fining and/or filtration, and sometimes being cold stabilized as well. That prevents it from aging in the traditional sense of a VP or even an unfiltered LBV. It won't harm them to age these filtered LBV's, but why wo...
