Re: Sandeman Veil
I'll try to get some answers Eric. Because I know that if you submit a 10 year Port for a 20 year old Tawny category, it could be accepted. Then it is a question of cross reference with your stocks. But if you have 10 000 liters of 20+ years old port and you only release 500 liters of that 10 year o...

New Port Category in 2022... Drum Roll
Let's have some fun, one of the category mentionned below will be officialized next year by the IVDP, the big question, which one? Rosé réserve? Dry Rosé? Rosé 10 Years? Vintage White? 50 Year Old Tawny? Orange Port? Blanc de Noir Port(white port from red grapes)? Single Variety Port? Port with an R...

Re: Basic Portugal recommendations
Late February and early March is the blooming time in the Douro. Almonds, apple, cherry, plums trees among others like mimosa create a majestic milky way kinda mosaic in the Douro. You can't miss the region of the birth of Port at this time of the year.

Re: What have you opened this week?
Quevedo Crusted bottled 2016, this is so good nowadays. I remember how last year it was still shut down. Starting its plateau at the moment Quevedo 10 years Old Tawny: A new blend has been made 2 weeks ago. I prefere this one to the previous as it is more pure in flavours, but definitively feels you...

Poeira She 2016, Quinta do Poeira, Douro : A fresh and lighter expression of Douro. Still got the ripe black fruits tones but less oak and less extraction at 12,5%, drinking very well.

Kopke has its revenge tonight, 1980 Colheita bottled in 2011, just amazing. Layers and layers of complex flavours. The kind of Port you don't want to go to bed with... I have to work tomorrow...

Re: What have you opened this week?
Had 1987 Kopke bottled 2016, nice but nothing special. Definitvely lacking the complexity and lenght from a Port of this age.

Re: 1987 Niepoort Garrafeira Port
I agree with you Roy! I guess I am lucky, I had it again yesterday...
I think I paid 275 for the 1977 on release... this one also doubled since a couple of years. The prices probably reflects the rarity and the spaces it takes to store them vs barrels or big vats. Similar to low yielding vineyards.

This one was not drunk on the job
On 2 days, even if I prefer the recent bottling of 1992 this 1994 is a great Colheita from Quevedo. Bottled in July 2021, it is really showing the generosity of the year and the fresh young character specific to Quevedo Ports. Yummy!

Re: 1987 Niepoort Garrafeira Port
I agree with your tasting notes Andy. I had this wine again last Tuesday and I feel it is shutting down. I've tried this Garrafeira Port straigth from Demijohns, final blend before bottling(I had the luck to be there when they blended it) and many times after and it amazes me how now it starts to fe...

Re: 1980 Warre's vintage port
This 1980 Warre's has been a favorite lately as well. Bought 3 in the last 2 years in Porto.
I've seen a lot of recorking from the Symington's Vintage 80, 83, 85 in the last few years in Porto's market.

Re: 2021 Douro report (in Portuguese)
Always funny to read that every year someone can find something exciting to write about the last harvest. Beside 2 weeks of ''normal'' warm weather in July, this is one of the coolest year Douro has experience as far as I can remember. If it was not for an early bud break due to once more, a friendl...

Feist 40 year Old Tawny
Bottled 1991 : Bought this in one of those Portuguese shop that use to be busier before the main distribution companies took over. It is the 2nd bottle I buy there and so far so good but I've seen some fake ones that the owner does not want to admit, so be careful. Clear brown/amber color, low satur...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?
Today was day off, went on a walk to try to find wine shops with special Port ''dying'' on the shelves. I normally avoid Vintage but had nice experiences with old Tawny/Colheita. These rare treasures are getting harder to find but I think it is still possible to get nicely priced Port with some bott...

Re: 1987 Niepoort Garrafeira
The first offcial Garrafeira from any Port compagnies was Niepoort 1977. Before that it was mostly something existing for the crazy geeks ;) My understanding nowadays is that it needs to stay under wood for 7 years(minimum) before being transfered to glass. Basically, if you get a colheita approved,...

Re: What have you opened this week?
A few treats from my boss last Friday. Quevedo Vintage 2019 sample : A lovely vintage, in the style of the 2017, packed with elegance and precision, great depth and purity. It did seduced all the guests at the table. Quevedo White Colheita 1975 : An amazing display of what white Port can be, profoun...
