If the tongs were used, I crush the neck to view a perfect cork.Eric Menchen wrote: ↑Thu Sep 07, 2023 12:14 pm I think a couple of the bottles on my shelf in that photo were tonged. You usually can carefully sit the top back on in place. If that doesn't work, a little tape or glue would probably be sufficient.

Re: What have you opened this week?
There's not a set criteria for what I keep. Old helps, but I've opened old bottles with a simple typed label that don't make the cut. Cool looking, did I really enjoy the wine, do I want to reminisce about it again for some reason. There's another section with non-dessert wines, and then a group of...

Re: What have you opened this week?
I bet a small tear drop fell to the ground watching all of those lovely, empty bottles being dumped into the recycling bin. Dirk Niepoort calls us 'The bottle killers' because we get through so many old bottles and don't hang on to the empties.. I keep some singles of empty bottles to line a shelf ...

1994 Ramos Pinto VP "Quinta de Ervamoira". Opened last night. Was ready to enjoy on a pop and pour. Super smooth and rich. Delicate spirit. I hope it doesn't fall apart over the week. Cork was perfect. Really dark in the glass with a minimum of sediment in the bottle. Inspired by me decan...

Seemed decent, had one glass on a pop and pour last night. Ripe and figs. Smooth spirit to it. I'll get more into it tonight.

Re: 1994 VP Horizontal Tasting
About 1 month ago I opened a 1994 Dow Vintage and it was very ordinary. Not bad but not great either. A fairly simple Port with little fruit and quite mineral. I tasted it when it was opened and after 8 hours of decanting it was still ordinary. I tried to like it though (I knew what I was drinking)...

1991 Warre VP. Initial pop and pour was a bit medicinal. Wife thought it tasted like Dimetapp, but I was a bit more complimentary. We'll see how it evolves tonight.

First step in diminishing property ownership rights. These types of laws are springing up all over the place.

Re: What have you opened this week?
1980 Ferreira Recently acquired it arrived as a leaker (known at auction it had leaked), so stood it up, wrapped top in plastic wrap and gave the bottle some time to settle. Late yesterday afternoon began the decanting process for a dinner party and when I removed the cap/foil there was no cork.......

Re: Van Zellers & Co Port Aged Underwater
I can envision underwater storage in the wine business as a way to potentially lower costs on storage.
If you can drop pallets of wine to the seafloor with little worry of theft/damage it could be cost effective vs. on land storage.

I put the bottle on its side, padded the neck from underneath and a sharp knife did the job.Tom Archer wrote: ↑Mon Aug 07, 2023 7:30 am About twenty seconds of steam directed at that thick plastic capsule is all that it takes to soften it, after which it can be pushed off with ease using the back of a knife.

1970 Offley Boa Vista VP. A leaker that moved to the front of the queue. Has one of the sphere looking capsules that are a pain to cut off. Tried using the tongs, but neck of the bottle was quite narrow. Tongs rested on the shoulder. Didn't heat high enough to cleave the bottle. Ended up cutting the...

Re: Is TCA in corks going down?
Yes wineries can introduce the flaw. Actually, recently, I've witness a winery filtering/cleaning a wine having TCA from a bad barrel. I could not detect it once it was ''cleaned''. So progress are being made both ways! They sprayed the barrel with Pooph https://i5.walmartimages.com/seo/POOPH-Pet-O...
