Re: 1985 30-year retrospective - February 26 - Chicago, IL
I have put as many as 18 glasses on 11x17 paper and it works just fine. That’s just under 3″ diameter. Even if the glasses fit, that seems tight for glasses+fingers. Still, if the ‘laboratory’ says that it works, then it works. Since we'll be max'ing at 16 people, 8 people each side of the table, w...

Re: 1985 30-year retrospective - February 26 - Chicago, IL
I will be printing out the placemats using my work's paper and printers. What size paper do I need if we have 14-16 people? Will the paper size change if we only have 10 people? What is the diameter of each circle? It is much more sensible to reverse the question: what sizes do you have? The softwa...

If you want me to make placemats for this event, just ask and it will be done. Thanks very much Julian. I'll take you up on that when we have the details finalized. Re: 1985 30-year retrospective - February 26 - Chicago, IL
Limited to 20 people, so that one bottle can stretch for tasting purposes. Tastings in London are capped at fourteen people. In Chicago, whether or not the streets might be mean, the pours definitely are. hold this event to a maximum of 16 OK, maybe the streets are really mean, and the side-kick po...

Re: ATTN: Chicago area Port Lovers
If you want me to make placemats for this event, just ask and it will be done. At a minimum you’ll need to send me a date, a list of Ports, a list of people, a location ( ? ), and some facts about organisation such as whether you’ll pre-pour. You should also be willing to check that it has been done...

Re: 1850-60s Menus w/ Madeira
Conveniently, the New York Public Library has digitised the Frank E. Buttolph menu collection. One of which lists Andresen 1868, despite Mayson claiming that Andresen’s first vintage was 1950.

Re: Declared years - the whiff of mischief...
But as you know, the IVP was not created until 1933, so do you believe that there was a regulation in place prior to that about the time a declaration had to be made? Fair. So, is there data about when the various shippers declared 1927? Or at least, an upper bound on when it was declared? ◊...

Re: Declared years - the whiff of mischief...
To be consistent with the observed data the purported effect would need to be very strong. Simple model: one year in three is a general declaration, each year being independent of others (contradicting AHB’s hypothesis). Pick at random a year, Y, that is a general declaration. Is it part of a back-t...

Re: Declared years - the whiff of mischief...
It could just be that great years are declared; un-declarable years are not; and the in-betweens depend on the state of the market. That would not be unreasonable. It certainly did not stop what is considered one of the all-time greatest vintages ... 1927 ... from being declared by a majority of pro...

Re: Free useful thing for those hosting a tasting
at one point I got hit by the bug/feature that required a huge amount of processing and prevented me from using some of the online PDF converters. And when I was using ghostscript, it was taking a long time with that version. That has been fixed. Sorry about that. But I can see in your sweet-wine t...

Re: Free useful thing for those hosting a tasting
Eric: that is the first time I have seen used in the wild /PermittedPackingStyles [ [/Arch /CentralGlasses 0] ] def . And you have done so rather elegantly. Out of interest, do you each time download the latest version of the software, or do you use an old version that is on your computer? And if yo...

Re: Free useful thing for those hosting a tasting
With Roy’s permission, this thread is being bumped. The placemat software is a labo(u)r of love, and has become rather excellent — even if I say so myself. So some recent examples follow (or see a more complete list ), to show what it does and why others should use it. (Reminder: it is free = $0 = £...

Re: Dow 1896 Nebuchadnezzar (20 bottles)
I doubt they did what I'm going to describe, but if can be done. Fill big bottle with nitrogen (or argon, or CO2). Use gas under pressure (just slightly higher than the pressure in the big bottle) to push wine out of bottles through tubing into the big bottle through a device that has a one way gas...

Re: Dow 1896 Nebuchadnezzar (20 bottles)
This bottle was filled about 25 years after the harvest by pouring 20 ordinary bottles into a biggie for a party intended to happen shortly after the re-bottling. I have some faith that the original small bottles were Dow 1896; but no faith at all in the care and hygiene of the re-bottling. Happy fo...

Re: Large format bottles
It took just over two years for the IVDP to accede to my request to allow big bottles. Those interested in such matters might enjoy comparing to the UK Debt Management Office (manager of the UK government’s debt), which has just decided no longer to create a temporary WI security , some 17.6 years a...
