Re: Lead Crystal precautions

It appears that the concern is for long term storage of port and other drinks in a lead decanter. Over time leaching occurs, but if you are decanting for a couple of hours, it seems safe. Below is an internet article from an authoritative sounding website called "the nibble", that n...

Re: neutral spirit in port?

photo-14.JPG photo-15.JPG photo-13.JPG here are some of the bottles of aguardent in my liquor cabinet. One is a pear aguardent, another a brandy, and 2 homemade - one in a large plastic luso bottle and the other in an old green wine bottle. The store bought bottles are old, but I have no idea how o...

Buying port in Portugal may get more expensive

I haven't seen anyone post this story: A prevention plan against depression and suicide in Portugal that is proposing an increase in the price of alcoholic beverages to prevent high levels of consumption has been slammed by industry traders. http://www.algarveresident.com/0-51427/algarve/alcohol-pri...

Why Douro wines?

Portugal has several DOC regions... even 4 in the Algarve. Why does Douro seem to be preferred by drinkers in this forum?

(Sorry for throwing out another novice question. I had the wine seller on Ferry Street, Newark explain it to me once. I am looking to see what others think.)

Re: neutral spirit in port?

I have several bottles of aguardente in the house, and none of them are neutral to me! holy moly - we translate it to "firewater" [shok.gif] They are mostly home-made aguardente and can peel paint. My father-in-law was shocked and promised no more aguardente when he saw me making "Cho...

neutral spirit in port?

What can anyone tell me about the "neutral spirit" added to port. I assume neutral means that it imparts no flavor to the product. What are some of the rules governing the spirit, how it's made, what it's made from etc.?

Re: Non generally declared vintages ... discussion

I just got back into port, and I was scared off the 2009s when I saw one store selling them for close to $120 USD last week. I haven't kept an eye out, but that seemed outrageous price for such a young VP. Am I wrong, or should I get used to the sticker shock?

Re: Lots of new faces ... please introduce yourself

John, Did you know you are in the midst of many of the USA's finest importers of Port and Douro wines? You like both Port and Madeira ... that is great! I hope someday you'll join us on a Fortification Tour to explore both. :winebath: Glad you've been enjoying your time well spent on the Forum and ...

Re: That's a big bottle of Graham's!

I have an 18 liter bottle waiting for my 70th birthday this summer. This was bottled especially for the occasion. I don't expect to have much trouble emptying it, as we routinely go through over 60 bottles at one of these birthdays, and the 18 liter is only 24 bottles. http://i898.photobucket.com/a...

Moscatels

There is plenty on this forum on port, madeira, and even wines from the Douro region. I have been sipping a moscatel de setubal, 2005 colheita, from Bacalhoa for a little while. It's been open for a couple of months, and I see no deterioration in its original quality. I am also holding a moscatel do...

Re: Lots of new faces ... please introduce yourself

John from Jersey (New Jersey, that is). I'm a casual drinker looking to educate myself in the wide world of port and madeira. I have an appreciation, but it's an occasional bottle or glass after a meal. The forum is chock full of info, and good links as well. (I spent many hours going over the novic...
