Re: 1985 30-year retrospective - February 26 - Chicago, IL

Just doing a bump here to let everyone know we still have 5 open slots for this tasting on February 26. It should be a fun and interesting learning experience.

If anyone has any questions, please reach out to me.

Re: Current Buying Op

I spoke with them earlier in the week and they said the orders were much more than anticipated. We should be getting calls about payment and shipping this coming week.

Re: 1985 30-year retrospective - February 26 - Chicago, IL

Placemats updated . (If the image looks old, try force-reloading the page. Which doesn’t work in Tapatalk.) Currently the Ports are on the page in the same order as in the summary post . Do they want flighting? Should the flights be separated with FlightSeparationLines ? Is the table big enough for...

Two more added, so we're up to 11. The two new folks are Scott Beilke and his wife Donna Brighton. They are members of the yacht club. Scott runs/coordinates the Wine Club at the yacht club, which holds monthly tastings based on different themes.

We're up to 9 attendees with Kurt coming up from Indy. It looks like a fun lineup.

Re: 1985 30-year retrospective - February 26 - Chicago, IL

If there are lots of glasses to be printed on 8½″×11″, then they are spread over multiple pages. This imposes a separate constraint: how much table space will there be per person. If you have only 17″ of table space each, and glasses of some fixed size, then there can be only so many glasses. The n...

Re: 1985 30-year retrospective - February 26 - Chicago, IL

John, Linda and I would like to attend. Please hold this event to a maximum of 16 and consider 2-3 hrs for tasting. That has been my experience for several of the past events I have attended and that works well. We did the '85 last January in Seattle over 2 days and tasted over 34 ports. I can brin...

Hi Brian,

I've put you down for the Fonseca. I'll bring a Gould Campbell instead.

Re: ATTN: Chicago area Port Lovers

If you want me to make placemats for this event, just ask and it will be done. At a minimum you’ll need to send me a date, a list of Ports, a list of people, a location ( ? ), and some facts about organisation such as whether you’ll pre-pour. You should also be willing to check that it has been don...

Re: ATTN: Chicago area Port Lovers

Hi Everyone! I've been communicating with Alex back channel to try to work out some details about date potential on this offline, and options on topic. I think we have some stuff worked out, and we have some date options for attendees to weigh in on. Here we go: Topic: 1985 Vintage Port - 30-year ho...

Re: Coravin and portwine

John, I've heard others mention that when you use such a system and the liquid starts getting low it seems to degrade faster. Have you noticed that when you get near the end of a bottle? Andy, I've not really tested that condition. By the time I'm down to about a quarter of the bottle left, I usual...

Re: Tawny rising

As a shop owner, i can say the market for the high end tawny is pretty slim. But there is a high demand for tawny reserve and 10 year old tawny. Why? I am not sure, maybe marketing. Creating nice bottles, gift packages etc. I would think it to be an issue of price. Here in northern Illinois, tawnie...

Re: Quarles Harris LBV question

I just found a good use for the 2007 QH LBV I have. I used it to create a great currant and port "jam" that I put on top of a brie and walnut cake . Instead of the grapes the recipe calls for, I took 1-1/2 cups of the QH port and combined it with 1-1/2 cups of dried currants and the honey ...

Re: Coravin and portwine

I have a Pungo instead of a Coravin, but the concept is the same. I don't use it to try different bottles and put them away, which is what Coravin seems to leverage as a benefit. For me I use it to allow me to drink a single wine over time, where I know I won't be drinking a bottle all at once. That...

Re: ATTN: Chicago area Port Lovers

As for #2: Topic is somewhat simple: bring a really nice bottle that everyone would find interesting. As Eric mentioned, for those of us that would seriously consider flying in, paying for airfare and hotel, "a really nice bottle" ... would likely need to have slightly more stringent para...

Re: ATTN: Chicago area Port Lovers

Let me check with the yacht club and see about some date choices to toss out to everyone in the February/March timeframe. Here's what I'm thinking as to a format for the evening, but everyone please chime in if you see it happening differently. 1. We max the evening at 16 people, so that one bottle ...

Re: Quarles Harris LBV question

Catching up on some older threads.

I bought a couple of 2007 QH LBVs at Trader Joe's thinking the same thing as Andy. For my palate, they're not worth the money. For a couple of bucks more, I can get Dow's LBV at Sam's Club, and this blows away the QH.
