Nikolaj, Considering that the Portuguese had a strong Naval presence way back when; combined with a fleet and "explorers" which is responsible for some of the most prolific discoveries on earth's surface guns are probably not as important. So naming these Solera's after those ships might ...

Andy, i have not taken a pic but this: http://www.philipsonwine.com/default.aspx?p=24&sku=55531018 looks quite the same. My friend's bottle does have the white banderole, too, but it has a capsule and not this brown tape as in the link. Thanks for participating in the detective game;-). It's no...

I'm with Paul Eddy on this one. I've often fantasized about "what if I were to make my own tawny" and then taking the train of thoughts to the extreme. The Solera-principle is a favourite of mine. The bottle should then state the amount of levels on the port (3-5-10-50...whatever) to indic...

In theory I'm all for screw-caps. But something got me thinking. Is it really that ideal for VERY long ageing, such as the finest bordeaux and especially VP? Personally I'm worried about corosion. I've seen many a metal cap with corosion and some close to leaking. Imagine if you keep your wine in th...

I do not think that the SQVPs detract from the quality of the "main" wine in most cases. Take a look a Grahams...I don't think anybody could say that their 94, 00, or 03 VP's were diluted by their decision to have a Malvedos in '04 or '95. Not at all. But it's just not whether they withho...

Personally, I steer clear of SQVP's from the major producers. Fonseca, my favourite producer has the Guimaraens-lable as a sort of second-lable AND a SQVP - often in the same years. To me it deflates Vintage Port. I'd say either you keep the exclusive exclusive, or you don't make exclusive at all. I...

Now that you mention the seal - it may be pristine, but it isn't new (although I don't know how to read them). It says AO 097793 3. The AO indicates that it's old (if the "A"'s were used before the "B"'s). Also, on the back of the neck - you can just make it out, there's a seal (...

Churchill's Late Bottled Vintage 2000 Traditional

Has anyone tried this wine? I'm wondering "where" it is both in time and "class". Is it "Warre's Traditional LBV"-class or???

Is there anybody out there?

Designer furniture. A vice that's even more expensive than port. Especially the great danish designers of the 40-50's and forward. In fact there are few designers outside of denmark who have made anything worth mentioning. TV, friends (not the show), movies, cooking, motorsports and last but not lea...

One would have to be very much into port to know when what is what. And it's unlikely that there'd ever be a market for varied alcohol levels in port. The area is difficult enough as it is. When that is said, I don't see any need for a dogmatic interpretation of the 20. vol. that's used now. I somet...

Yes, my port consumption increase as the weather gets colder and the days shorten. It also becomes (even) more tawny-focused. Perhaps we drink a VP with the christmas dessert, but then we hit the tawny, eating marzipan, nuts etc. Regarding wine in general, it also becomes heavier and heavier, focusi...

Yeah, I'm not sure about the greatnes of golden toilets either. A tip on the feelings on the queen - Let the brits begin the rant and then join the choir. Besides, the difference is that when you critizise the queen, you critizise a system. When you critizise the president, you critizise a person. B...

Maybe this should be in another forum, I'm not sure. However, here goes. I'm pondering making my own port-poster. I can see that Ramos Pinto has posters of their own, but I'm thinking more of a collage and something like 1m by 1,5-2m. Does anyone kow of a place where one can get high resolution pict...

I was just wondering what you guys do for a living? So often I see people referring to their job and it made me wonder - what sort of motley crew is actually exchangeing ideas and opinions inhere? What are your backgrounds etc. I can start with myself. I'm a 28yo single male that works as an analyst...
