Re: Is TCA in corks going down?

Cork TCA is definitively going down. I remember when I started drinking and collecting wines over 20 years ago, I would get one bottle corked per 2 weeks minimum. It was easily 3-5% of faulty wines. Nowadays, from what I drink, I'd say less than 1%. Yes wineries can introduce the flaw. Actually, rec...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Quinta do Bomfim 2013, I'm curious as 2013 was very challenging but if good stuff was harvested before the rain, it can be stellar!

Re: What have you opened this week?

LBV 2018 from Niepoort, really nice QPR, same with Andresen 10 years old white, probably the best out there. Look for the Barao de Vilar 10 y.o. white if you can find it. I think it's better than the Andresen. I'll try again, haven't tasted it in a very long time. Shouldn't be hard to find here in ...

Re: discovered a leaker

I'd recork like Eric mentions. You need to find a really good wax, like the Kopke style too. To recork, buy a very young high quality wine and put that cork on your leaking bottle. You could also open a younger Graham's Vintage at the same time and top your leaking bottle with this. This is sometim...

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

Picked up a few bottles of Colheita 2016 Malmsley from Blandy's. at 13euros per bottle, it is a bargain! Great complexity already for such a young Madeira.

Re: 1964 Niepoort Garrafeira

It does indeed looks like a bad bottle. Can you share a photo? Normally the 1964 has XXXs on the decanting date. Just to confirm you did not have a fake. Like on this photo, this is what I normally expect from the 1964 https://www.custojusto.pt/lisboa/desporto-lazer/vinho-gastronomia/porto-niepoort-...

Re: Corked bottle refund

They could have helped you out but if they had a policy of making whole everyone who bought a corked bottle, they couldn't stay in business. I think this is a very bad statement without any backing proof. Burmester and Sogevinus and very profitable and corked wines represent less than 2% of the win...

Corked bottle refund

2 weeks ago I bought a bottle of Burmester 40 years old. Unfortunately it was corked. I went to the Burmester shop in Vila Nova de Gaia and after a few ''sorry I don't know what to do with this'' someone finally called her manager and the answer is ''our company does not offer refund for corked bott...

Re: Advices for my Barros Vintage 1980

I agree with Mike. Also, looking at the IVDP seal color, it could have spend some good time in a window catching the sun. It would also explain the signs the of leakage as bottle standing up often gets their cork dry and then once it returns to a proper position in the cellar they do leak. Barros 19...

Burmester 40 Tawny bottled 1990 Burmester 1989 Colheita bottled 1997 Ferreira 20 years old Duque de Bragaça bottled 1991 I'm a big fan of bottled aged Tawnies, I never had the Ferreira before with so many years, it should be popped soon. When I can get those oldies cheeper than the new release, it i...

I had tried this one after bottling and I thought it was very educationnal to see what this grape could bring to Port. I felt it was very spicy/peppery for a Tawny.

ISO glasses are quite effective for group tastings. I am now in love with Gabriel glasses. One glass to fit them all, it works!

Re: Vintage Chart for Colheita?

I feel for Colheita it would be hard to define. It is easy to define a year that was generally qualitative for Vintage Port. But what you need for great Colheita can be found in almost any harvest. You basically don't want to start with a wine that has the structure of Vintage Port and then you have...
