Re: What do you look for in a Port?
I prefer vintage port way over tawny's. The only tawny I still have in my cellar is the 20y old Ferreira Duque de Braganca. For VP I seem to have a preference for the somewhat sweeter style. I don't have had all the bigger names yet (I never f.i. had a VP from Noval National or Ferreira) and from so...

Unfortunately I've experienced that.. one bottle showed extremely well and another was very bad...Mike Meehan wrote: The Niepoort '97s have a firm reputation for leaking and/or suffering from serious VA...you have avoided the leakers but may find the other 4 bottles have a different problem

Re: Croft 1977
Just check them when you get them. I recently opened a case of Cr77 and find that 9 of 12 were leaking, one bottle was down to mid shoulder. Just a dumb question maybe, but do you (and others) never open a case before buying/paying it? Esp. when it concernes old bottles? I'm aware that this might n...

Re: 1987 Kopke quinta Sao Luiz VP
I still do have some bottles of 1987 Taylor's Vargellas, Fonseca Guimaraens and Graham's Malvedos in my cellar. I had all of them in the last two or three years and they showed way better.

1987 Kopke Quinta Sao Luiz Vintage Port
Opened this morning. Cork came out in two pieces, cork was about 1 cm saturated. Poured some out in a glass to let some air in. Tasted it after 6 hours. The colour is a bit pale, redbrownisch, totaly transparent. The nose is like caramel. Also the palate is very sweet with a lot of caramel and brown...

Re: 1995 Taylor Vargellas
I've just bought a 6-pack of Graham's Malvedos 1995 last week, so will try one in the following weeks.
I think the 1995 and 1996 SQVP's are drinking really nice at the moment.

1995 Taylor Vargellas Vintage Port
Had this over several days and it was drinking very well. The cork came out in one piece, about 1 cm saturated. The colour is rubyred, almost no bricking at the rim. Very nice nose, on the palate a lot of fruit, milkchocolate, grapefruit and mint (after eight), very well integrated spirit and a good...

I have never heard of this brand, does it still exist?Eric Menchen wrote:7x 1948 Suarez Vintage Port
I have no idea if these will be good, but the two bigger name bottles I've had from that year were great, so I thought I would take the risk.

I hardly dare to say, but another six-pack of Croft Q.da Roeda 2005. At € 34,50 a steal of a deal!

2005 Croft Quinta da Roeda vintage port
Opened yesterday morning, poured a bit out (in a glass to sip of course) and left the bottle for about eight hours. Cork came out in one piece. The colour is like a dark Bordeaux wine, not purple anymore, very very slighly transparent, but no bricking at the rim. I always seem to have a problem with...

I love the newsletters. That being said, there are a lot of newbies who read these, and while it is great to read all your tasting notes many are things a newbie won't likely get a chance to drink or even have a chance to buy. I'd like to see you include some more ports that are readily available i...

Re: Port drinking windows
I was looking for some information about the 2000 Smith-Woodhouse VP today and stumbled over this article: http://www.jancisrobinson.com/articles/how-good-are-the-2000-ports When I look at the drinking window advice of the Vesuvio I must have done something wrong [shrug.gif] as I just bought a case ...

1996 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port
Opened yesterday, not decanted. First bottle of a 6-pack, which I bought a few years ago from a private person in Belgium at just € 20 a bottle, even for a SQVP a real bargain over here. It was stored in his cellar, so pretty good I guess. Despite the slighly lesser reviews on CT and FTLOP I like th...

1996 Fonseca Guimaraens vintage port. The first bottle of a six-pack.
Opened just an hour ago and sipped a smal pour, the first impression is not bad at all. Will write a TN in a few days.

Re: Vintage year debate
As I don't have as much experience as most of you, and the oldest bottles I drunk were from the 1977 vintage, my two preferences are: 7: 1977 Dow (delicious) + Warre (very good), 1987 Graham (delicious) + Taylor (loved several bottles) + Fonseca (very nice), 1997 Vesuvio (had it twice, both showed v...

Re: What have you opened this week?
2007 Pocas vintage port.
I did have this in juli 2011 and had a great experience with it.
This bottle showes not that well, I've had it over three days now; it's rather soft and thin, almost only sweet fruit, but hardly any tannins and a short finish. Is this what you call a dump phase?

I agree on John's comment.
As I do love to read the newsletters, many experiences are over my head.
I did like the article about starting a tastinggroup!
