Wow Tom, you really are well organized..!
I'm almost ashamed when I think of the organization of my own cellar..
I do keep a record of what I owe in Xcell, but it takes some time in the cellar to find the right bottle..

Re: 1998 Fonseca - $40 | Worth Buying?
Did you get some, Moses? Tasted one? I ask because I can buy a case for less than €30 a bottle.. No, I didn't buy any. I figure for $40, I could buy more '83-'85 Graham or the like instead... Maybe, I'd buy one Fonseca just try it, but I haven't been buying much VP. I don't get a chance to drink VP...

Re: What is the highest rated LBV you've had?
Last year I had the good luck to attend an amazing tasting at Oscar and Claudia Quevedo. We did a blind tasting of 23 Port Wines - half of it were Vintage Ports, the other half LBVs (12:11) It was just amazing to see for example the Ramos Pinto Vintage 82 against the Ramos Pinto LBV 82. Or the Niep...

Re: What is the highest rated LBV you've had?
From memory and description, as I never give points, my favorite late bottled vintages are Warre's 1992 and Smith Woodhouse 1995. I still have the SW '95 in my cellar, so must try one again soon. I love 1995 SW.....may have to visit! Smith Woodhouse LBV '95 is definitely also my favorite ...

Re: What have you opened this week?
Opened (and took a sip) of one my favorite VP's tonight in order to drink it tomorrow with my son and his wife, the 2000 Fonseca VP.
I love this wine very much, I had it several times and it has never disapointed me. Lovely wine!

Re: Establishing my port collection.
Hi Thomas, As Eric mentioned, these prices are ridiculous, even for the European mainland. In the Netherlands you can buy the Fonseca 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2009 VP f.i. at Ton Overmars (Amsterdam) between ca. €80 and €90. The Croft Roeda 2004/2005/2008 VP at Sauter for about €30-€35. Both are very re...

Oké.. My oldest son sometimes makes beer also, but I don't think he uses wooden barrels. Nice!Eric Menchen wrote:I make beer, and regularly age it in wine and spirit barrels.Monique Heinemans. wrote:You make port yourself??

Re: Port wood chips
I have not seen those in particular, but am quite intrigued. Wood chips are commonly used by brewers and winemakers to add flavor without having to use a barrel. I tend to prefer using an actual barrel, but in my parts a Port barrel is about 4x the cost of a regular wine barrel, so perhaps I should...

Re: VP in Half Bottles
Thank you Alex! I've never had the experience of drinking port that old as you have had, my parents didn't drink port, so they didn't left me any and in the Netherlands port (esp. the older ones) is very expensive compared to f.i. the UK. But I've just ordered 6 halves 2011 Niepoort VP and plan to o...

Re: VP in Half Bottles
As I'm in my fifties, my last big purchase were the 2000 VP's, all 750ml bottles and 3 mag's (Fonseca). After that I just bought some 2003 (Croft, Niepoort, Dow, Vesuvio), 2007 (Vale Meao, Pocas) and 2011 (Dow). My question now is: Does it make sense to buy some 375ml VP's from 2011 (f.i. the Niepoo...

Re: What have you opened this week?
After more than a year finally opened a bottle of port.. 1995 Warre VP, decanted for 24 hours but it showed its best after 48+ hours. That's a long wait for a glass of port  Yes indeed, I'm deeply ashamed  Will never happen again as my son and daughter in law moved to my hometown last ...
