Re: Madeira Recommendation?
thanks for the recommendations. I'm in Kentucky until the 26th and they don't even have a single Madeira at the mega Liquor Barn... so I'll have to wait until I get back to Seattle... A couple of friends sent me their Bourbon wish lists that included many 10+ yr aged bourbons including Pappy and oth...

thanks guys!
I'll get back over there on Sunday and grab the bottle...Esp. if they have a decent return policy regarding corked vintaged wines. I'll report back after I try it. Thanks to everyone who took the time to chime in!

Found a 375ml 1980 Gould Campbell for $32 y or n?
I've read people's tasting notes on this particular VP in FTLOP database. The review seem mixed, or at least the bottles seem to be hit and miss. Is this worth trying at $32 or is $32 just the going rate?

Re: Maderized Champagne versus Madeira...and the hype of 2011 vintage Port.
Well, I bought one on Thursday, and the bar tender is holding the remaining 3 for me to pick up on Monday. Its definitely fantastic. However, while the Pol Roger Churchill is a more prestigious cuvee than the '08 Charles Heidsieck we had last Friday, if I tasted both blind, side-by-side I don't thin...

Re: Maderized Champagne versus Madeira...and the hype of 2011 vintage Port.
I realize we are WAY off topic at this point, but speaking of rare Champagne finds, I'm visiting my mom in Kentucky and I found a restaurant that had 1988 Pol Roger sir Winston Churchill on the menu for $99! I though it was a misprint for sure, so I ordered it an out it came. When I expressed my enj...

Madeira Recommendation?
I just finished the last of my Broadbent 5 yr. I enjoyed the Madeira, but I realize that I need to step up to a 10 year to get a proper introduction to Madeira. I almost bought a bottle of Rare Wine Co. historic series but I wasn't sure that it would have 10yrs of age. Bradley, told me on Saturday t...

Re: Maderized Champagne versus Madeira...and the hype of 2011 vintage Port.
I think there is a difference between aged, oxidized Champagne versus Madeira/Maderization. Some Champagne is deliberately made in a relatively more oxidative style, Krug is the one that comes to mind. With age, all Champagne develops that nutty, biscuty flavor that comes with slow gentle oxidation...

Re: FTLOP 8th Anniversary Tasting, 8-10-2013
Decanting schedule question...and possible future tasting idea. First off, I want to thank Glenn for hosting such and Amazing anniversary tasting. I also want to thank Roy and Glenn for my invitation. As I polish off the last of the '63 Croft, I'm noticing again how much more enjoyable an individual...

Re: #7. Avoid imported wine. REALLY???
It's funny, but as I read this list of advice my first instinct was to find all the holes. For the average person (non-vinophile) though, who just wants to drink some "wine" on occasion, most of the advice is actually quite sound.

Re: Maderized Champagne versus Madeira...and the hype of 2011 vintage Port.
Barry, my apologies. I should have separated the questions to keep each of the topics in their respective forums. To refocus this topic, I'd still like to know why Madeira isn't more popular, when people who are exposed to "Madeira" flavor profiles seem to respond so positively. I have ano...

Maderized Champagne versus Madeira...and the hype of 2011 vintage Port.
I tried my first Madeira last month, breaking my "cherry" with a Broadbent reserve 5yrs. I enjoyed th taste almost a much as I'm currently enjoying the way the Madeira can sit out on the counter in my 80 degree apartment week after week without degrading. A beverage that embraces heat and ...

Re: What have you opened this week?
Taylor Fladgate LBV 2007. Roy mentioned that steak and LBV port can be a delicious pairing. With the weather so nice in the Seattle area this week I decided to open the port figuring I be grilling this weekend...still haven't fired up the grill, but I keep drinking the port. This is my first LBV eve...
