1970 Taylor Vintage Port

This Taylor label says bottled 1972 by the Savoy Hotel, London. Nose: mellow strawberry and cherry fruits. a few hours later, on swirling I got notes of shaved carrots, VA and raspberries/blackberries and cream. Day 2, some black cherry, eucalyptus, and some cigar box (both the wood and the tobacco)...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

I just grabbed the following:
Offley Boa Vista 1985 x2
Offley Boa Vista 1994 x2
Taylor 1997 x1

I've consistently enjoyed the Offley style at the '83, '85, and '94 FTOLP events so I thought it was time to buck up and buy a few.

TN: 2006 Herdade do Mouchao, Mouchao tinto

Sweet smelling nose of stewed strawberries, cherries and a sexy ripeness. This Alentejo red has none of the earthiness that I usually find with most reds I've had from the Douro. On the palate this wine feels balanced and it is lighter and more elegant than I would expect based on the nose. Swirling...

Re: Portuguese whites vs white Burgundy...

Moses, I've been on a big white wine kick that was started last year when some people where kind enough to open mid level bordeaux blanc (Chateau Haut de Smith), nice US viognier (Reynvaan) and quality Spanish (Lopez de Heredia) in my presence. Those wines delivered a level of sheer pleasure and int...

Roy, nice work on the restaurant venues! As for the tasting structure, I'm happy with either Eric's idea or the A,D (Dry to Sweet while blind) procedure.

Portuguese whites vs white Burgundy...

I was turned on to the quality of Portuguese whites at a distributor tasting two years ago where Herdade do Esporao wines were being poured. The distributor was pushing the Esporao reserva branco 2011, but they also had back vintages to taste along side the 2011. I think they might have been pouring...

Re: What can wine learn from whiskey?

Wow! Thank the lord that we have an off-topic thread for this kind of stuff. I found this linked article absolutely FASCINATING! I also wonder exactly how many port producers are striving to increase their market share 20 fold. However, this is exactly the kind of marketing that a "port produce...

Re: Premier Cru warning

FYI: I received notice & instructions for the US Bankruptcy court last week. Seeing as they have $70MM in liabilities and $7MM in assets I'm filing a claim with Amex. They immediately credited back one order when I filed the claim online but the smaller 1/3rd wouldn't work online, I had to call...

Alright! This event looks like it's coming together. Only 4 spots left for the full weekend immersion. Is David Spriggs getting in on this event?

Okay, I know this is going to comeback to haunt me with my school workload in April, but I'm in for both days! Lets try to make this a partial Madeirathon reunion. Llyn and Eric, I miss you guys and I'm looking forward to seeing you both in Seattle.

Re: Premier Cru warning

Bradley, I agree, and I felt this way with 2010 and 2011 Bordeaux futures (I didn't buy any) but I was astounded that you could basically buy something aged, in its prime, and from a reputable seller for less or equal to what some of the houses were getting on their current releases. At least with s...

Re: NYC's Best Restaurant Wine List Values

Eric - Will Colorado even allow you to bring your own bottle? I'd like to see that law changed if it hasn't been already. What do you do about the problem in Colorado? Have you found any good wine value restaurants in Boulder or Denver? You can't bring a bottle to a restaurant in Colorado. And no, ...

Re: NYC's Best Restaurant Wine List Values

Wow, I'm happy to see that my last post reignited this topic and that several people have chimed-in over the last week. I wanted to respond to a couple of posts: Andy - I've often thought the same thing that you mentioned...if restaurants would lower the price, wouldn't they make up for the lost pro...

Re: NYC's Best Restaurant Wine List Values

It's refreshing to know that some restaurants (even in the expensive Big Apple) are focused on value wines. Often, when I look at a restaurant's wine list, the list looks to me like the wine buyer has intentionally avoided including any value wines and instead select really crappy low priced wines s...

Re: For friends of the NYC dining scene: now this!

This whole issue pisses me off. I'm sick of the big distributors strong arming regulations in their favor that diminish my choices as a consumer. While we're on this subject, some part of me also wishes that the federal government would regulate the taxation on alcohol even if that mean that they ad...

I think they'd just need to make a phone call and not even bother with scheduling a flight. [berserker.gif] You're absolutely right, Roy.
