Excellent article on dry wines' role in sweet wine survival

In case any of you FTLOP members from Seattle area are snowed in this weekend, I thought I'd include a link to a GuildSomm article about the role of Dry wines in Sweet/fortified wine economic sustainability. The article begins with a focus on the Douro wines then moves to Tokaj, Sauternes and Sicily...

Re: Interstate shipping crackdown

I've been shipping wine to my mom in KY for the past several years. I try to use the 4 bottle and 6 bottle shippers as they tend to look more like a common size package. I also cut the styrofoam to allow me to invert half of the bottles so the box doesn't end up so bottom heavy. (If you've lifted en...

Re: Interstate shipping crackdown

Glenn, if worst comes to worst, I can pay to bring a case of Eric's wine on the plane with me during my next trip to Denver. I go to Denver twice a year (usually December and June). You guys should let me know if I can help out.

2003 Warre’s LBV

Tasted directly from pop n’ pour. The notes are from tasting it toward the end of the night. After tasting many of the 2011 LBV‘s and being afforded the opportunity to try some of the great 1994 LBV’s I have a renewed interest in the LBV category. I was lucky enough to find this 2003 Warre LBV on my...

Re: Premier Cru warning

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead... I attended back-to-back dinner events tonight and ended up eating way too much food. I turned on my TV while I was beached on my couch waiting to digest my food enough to go to sleep. Lo an behold, CNBC channel's American Greed was on and airing a sto...

1985 Offley Boa Vista VP

From pop 'n pour through day 1, this VP smelled of hard red candies (like Jolly Ranchers), cassis, cinnamon, black cherry. After day 1, anise and pecan notes also joined the nose. The palate was primarily blueberries, blackberries, cognac, and applebutter. This finished with acidity noticeably highe...

Glenn E. wrote:'94 Offley Boa Vista did very well at the 1994 Horizontal, as I recall. A bit of a surprise for most people. Was yours an OBV or just a straight Offley?

Thanks for the reminder, Glenn. It was a Boa Vista and I'be edited the title of my original post to reflect that.

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

I grabbed a 1960 Blandy's Bual in the Bay Area a few weeks ago. The price seemed reasonable but then I read Roy's only TN on this wine and it was not favorable. I'm going to crack this bottle sometime before the New Year and either confirm or dispute Roy's TN....I''ll drink it with Roy so he'll like...

1994 Offley Boa Vista vintage port

On pop 'n pour (and for 2 days after) this had a nose of purple fruits, leather and banana. The palate was extremely primary and concentrated with the most dominant flavor being blueberry. The finish was fairly long with spiky acid and distinct tannins that were not too overpowering. Based on the in...

Re: Avoid the Trap

This sounds like advice that could be appropriate for all wine collecting in general (not exclusively port). Just out of curiosity, how many bottles of wine do you all think you consume annually? I reviewed my CellarTracker account which shows that I've recorded 122 bottles consumed in the last year...

If Fox and PC are Bankrupt, where did the $45 million go? Off-shore accounts? I could probably stand 6 years of minimum security resort prison in exchange for $45 million. Doesn't sound like much of a punishment to me when compared to the crime. Andy, you're only a 6 hr drive from the Bay Area, coul...

Great, Now I can expect another round of "wine" gifts from well meaning people who know nothing about wine but wish to give an Xmas gift they hope I will appreciate. Oh well, The last electric wine openers I received resold fairly well on eBay.

Re: Are you a fan of Bordeaux? A fine article

After reading the article, I actually found a lot to like about Asimov' perspective. I was also fortunate enough to "cut my teeth" on aged second growth (and a few first growth) BDX's as well as aged nebbiolos. I agree that food often brings out the best in these wines. As an example I ope...

The issues with the region are complicated, but it basically boils down to this: The good wines cost a lot of money; its English-speaking audience is aging; the dominant grapes, cabernet sauvignon and merlotThe issues with the region are complicated, but it basically boils down to this: The good wi...

1964 Krohn Colheita Branco port

When I popped this wine into the decanter, it had an enticing nose of honey, fruitcake and butterscotch. I poured a smidge into a glass to taste and noted honey, herbs and a refreshing acidity on the palate that made this wine seem vibrant, youthful and light. The residue in the glass I used to tast...

So I know this thread has been dead for a while now and I steared it off course from its original topic of best NYC wine values toward a more general wine value topic..,but I came across a fantastic value tonight in San Francisco at Harvey's on Castro st. $6 glass pours of Ficklin 10yr tawny but the...

Did you get those from Flickinger? I saw the sale email, but wasn't all that impressed with the selection they had available. (Or the prices... yet, tomorrow may be better.) Sorry for the late reply, Glenn. Yes, I purchased the '94 and '85 Offley Boa Vistas during the Flickinger sale. The prices we...

Re: Krohn 30 Year Old Tawny Port

It just seems like a pretty big cliff to be solely a bottling date issue. I haven't had any "in between" bottles yet... they've either been great or completely flat and uninspiring. They're definitely getting long in the tooth for Krohn, though, so I'm sure that bottling date will soon be...
