Re: Portuguese Wine Chocolates

I love the place. Very friendly and helpful staff from top to bottom. I was supposed to do a port tasting with their wine guy, but couldn't find the time go down with a few bottles. Is that Andre, or someone else? I only get to the store a few times a year. Is it bad that when I show up, the wine g...

Re: Portuguese Wine Chocolates

Been shopping there for a long time. They have a good selection considering being told that MA is a small Portuguese wine market compared to other locales in the US. I love the place. Very friendly and helpful staff from top to bottom. Who remembers the scene from the movie "Clerks" where...

Re: Portuguese Wine Chocolates

Which were the favorites? Still evaluating [emoji16] Proper evaluation is good!! After much extensive study - I have concluded that they are all very good, but too similar to choose a favorite. The label claims they are all 39% wine, and you can taste it, but not pronounced enough to tell much diff...

I’ve got one open, it is pretty damn good.
My experience is less than yours Eric, but I haven’t had a better one either.

Portuguese Wine Chocolates

I was at our local Portuguese marketplace today, picking up some wine and cheese. In the checkout line I spotted these treats. Small chocolates containing either Niepoort ruby Port, J.M. Fonseca Moscatel, or Touriga Nacional wine!! Wholly unexpected in the U.S. Of course I grabbed an assortment. htt...

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?

Over the past few days, I’ve been drinking the Barbeito Duas Pipas Bastardo. I’m interested in the insights of those more experienced with the the bastardo grape. I’ve only tasted the grape a couple of times and both were many years ago, early in my coming to really get to know Madeira, so my notes...

Re: What have you opened this week?

And the winner was...? Good for you on calling me out. I was being lazy. [emoji16] This Dalva bottle unfortunately isn’t the best I’ve had, it’s very enjoyable, but flatter than others I’ve had. So not a fair fight. The Leonardo is as-advertised, silly good. I need to know how Miguel gets this prof...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Enjoying a lineup of 40yo white ports tonight.

* Dalva Golden White 1971
* S. Leonardo 40yo White
* Kopke 40yo White

A great side-by-side, each a very different animal than the last.

These Justino's Colheitas (1996, 1997, 1998) are a fantastic value. I always have a few in my cellar.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Total Wine has been stocking a lot of Quinta das Carvalhas port this year. I’ve been generally ignoring it, but last week I noticed they had a packaged set of miniatures - 10yo, 20yo, 30yo, and 40yo. I love sets like this - it’s how I got into Scotch years ago, with a miniature set of 4 different re...

Kopke Very Old Dry White Port

Bottled in 2019. Clear golden hue in the glass. Sticky legs with drops that cling to the glass and never reach the surface. Nose - Apple, un-ripe pear, apricot, subtle cotton candy sweetness, salted chocolate. Palate - Viscous mouth feel, light fresh flavors of apricot marmalade and caramel. A pleas...

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

I picked up a 1971 D'Oliveiras Terrantez to fill out a 6-pack from Rare Wine Co. In total, that shipment contains: 2 x NV Barbeito 50 Year Old Malvasia O Japones 3 x 1986 Barbeito Malvasia Candida Faja dos Padres 1 x 1971 D'Oliveiras Terrantez Recently picked up a 71 Terrantez also, enjoying a glas...

Eric Ifune wrote:I got mine awhile ago. I think both the 71 and 88 are better. Still, it's pretty classic and needs a lot of air to show it's best. I'd rather buy the 88 right now.
Thanks for the advice. I’ve always loved the ‘71, enjoying a glass of it right now. Just picked up a ‘88 per your recommendation.

Re: 1971 Presidential (Dalva) Golden White port

I’ve never had the pleasure of tasting the 52. I enjoy the 63, but prefer the 71 as it’s more in line with what I look for in a white. The 63 is more dark and brooding.

Do yourself a favor, pick up a Kopke 1978 Colheita, and do a side-by-side with the 40.

Re: Do S. Leonardo tawny's decline faster than average?

You're not disagreeing, you're saying something different. I said significant change. You're talking about detectable change. Those aren't the same thing. What Mike's talking about is not some slight change that indicates a Port is starting to change from being in bottle. What he's talking about so...
