Re: Graham's to release a special edition Six Grapes Old Vines Port
I wouldn't call it an everyday price, as it is more than LBV; but it is an attractive enough price that I will want to try a bottle, and hopefully buy more. Likewise. I will definitely pick up a bottle, and if it impresses I'll stock up. Glenn, be warned, it is likely to be red and fruity, not brow...

Re: POLL: Expect to expectorate your Port?
I spit young Ports in a significant line-up They give very little drinking pleasure. But I find it somewhat disrespectful to the wine and the winemaker of mature Ports to spit. As for "dumping" (mature wines or Ports) - go to the back of the class and consider what you have done - we will ...

Re: The trend continues, more 19th Century Ports being released
Are these ultra-luxury tawnies going to receive the usual accusations about having been "refreshed"? I asked Paul Symington at the launch event whether or not the Ne Oublie has been refreshed and he assured me that whilst in the ownership of the family the existing three casks had only be...

Re: Those tasty things in Port
Apart from obvious flaws (TCA, VA, etc) the only taste that really turns me off Port is excessive sweetness. There have been a few Ports that I have tasted that leave the same after-taste as artificial sweeteners like saccharin or have a crystalline texture that is rather unpleasant. Anything that t...

Re: Interesting news coming from THE FLADGATE PARTNERSHIP
Interesting. 6.8% pre-tax profit from a company selling luxury consumables doesn't sound good. Tough times and the encouraging thing is that it is a positive number! I hope they don't make the same mistake that Romaniera did and create another white elephant in the Douro. Good hotels are needed, but...

Re: To spit ... or not ... at a large tasting
I only spit young Ports, and only when there are lots of different wines to taste. Spitting fine, mature or semi-mature Port just seems wrong to me. These noble wines don't deserve to go down a drain after spending decades in a bottle waiting to give pleasure. It annoys me intensely to see fine wine...

Re: Eight Years After
That taxi ride will live with me forever. After what seemed like hours of driving around in darkness the driver stopped in a wooded area, got out of the car, walk around the back to take something out of the boot (trunk) and Alex and I thought we were about to be axed to death and never seen again! ...

Re: Graham's Ne Oublie
(As near as I can tell, it probably means "never forget" in Scottish. Though I'm getting that from French because Google apparently doesn't think that Scottish is a real language.) Scottish language is known as Scots . Despite many protestations from nationalist sources it is and always w...

Re: 1977 Graham VP
I have no notes to refer to but have tasted this Port a number of times over the past decade and it definitely seems to be improving. I remember it being consistently thin and hot but more recent experiences have shown much more composure. My experience with this Port is similar to that of Taylor 19...

Re: How long has it been since you've ordered Port in a restaurant?
Christopher and I shared a very nice bottle of Offley Boa Vista 1977 at The Bung Hole in London a few weeks ago. At £85 it was not inexpensive, but it was good value for a mature VP from a restaurant wine list.

Re: In search of Average
DRT owns several bottles of Royal Oporto 1983. Make him an attractive offer (start the negotiation at 5¢ each), and you'll have your once-in-a-lifetime chance to rate a Port below 80. I also have 11 bottles of Offley Boa Vista 1972 which would allow the "below 75pts" category to be benchm...

Re: When was the first time you shared some port with Julian
I first met Julian on 1st September 2007 at a Fonseca vertical. When I walked in the door he handed me a Sercial 1940, the first Madeira I had ever tasted. We then drank lots of Port together. We had met online, at :ftlop:, and had already decided that we didn’t like each other. Presumably I won hi...
