Good notes. Certainly a very good wine. My guess is Tinta Negra.

Re: Christies. What did you win?
Alan,
BTW. I had that 1917 Barbeito on the island. It has a paper label, correct? Cork completely crumbled due to it being stored upright for decades. I popped and poured which was a big mistake. Lots of bottle stink. Needs days of decanting.

Thanks for the heads up Alan. Perhaps it is some kind of software that holds your computer files for ransom madeira bottles!

I agree with Eric. That Fdp broadened my horizon on what madeira wine can be.

Re: 2016 FTLOP Madeira get together
Roy,
My suggestion would be tasting through the entire Acciaioly lineup the first afternoon. Obviously, the second afternoon will be spent tasting the entire HH reserva lineup.

Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?
NV Valdespino Moscatel Toneles. You guys should try one of these. Its remarkably deep and long. Very similar in flavor profile to a Bual/Malvasia Madeira but deeper and sweeter and more concentrated. Lacks the acidity tho that distinguishes Madeira. Should be sipped in small doses.

Re: Sercial--what is the best Serical eyeopener?
79 Borges is great. No question. Just atypical for a sercial. Not quite sure if I would recommend it as an "eyeopener' per se, as it is a bit sweeter than a typical sercial. The young (60's to 70's) d'Oliveiras are perhaps a better choice.

Re: Richard Mayson's view
I had the 1880 Barbeito Malvasia from demijohn on the Madeirathon tour last May. It was incredible. It showed a more muted quality at the Malvasia tasting in New York. Richard Diogo thought that it was tasting great considering that it was relatively recently bottled. So I am very hopeful that it w...
