Hi Roy. I'd love to spend more time on this site but competition for the computer is tough around here! I just got a bottle of 1980 dow which might die soon, though I got some others as well that I'd like to try, like the 92 Warre Cavadinha. We rarely see aged ports in Ontario, even more rare...

1980 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port

Tasted last week, from a half bottle. After a mere 3 hours in the decanter, medium body, medium sweet. Colour a little lighter than expected, though the wine was still rich and classier, more so than I recalled from my only previous bottles about 6 years ago. I tasted dark chocolate, alcohol-infused...

1988 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

From a half bottle. Just opened and decanted a couple of hours ago. A little dusty but nicely sweet and rich, though still a bit hot. Perhaps this will dissipate which more time in the decanter? The colour goes right to the rim, suggesting that it is not fully mature, which is borne out on the tasti...

Thanks for posting that Stevie - it really does bring back the memories! We look like a bunch of demon portdrinkers!

But don't you have one with you in it?

My pleasure! :D BTW, at one point Nicos was supposed to attend this offline. I would have loved to have met him. And David, from the Wineloverspages did attend, along with tsunami, whose port collection is perhaps the greatest of anyone I know. As long as we're trading stories of BBR, you might also...

A story for portlovers

I mentioned this story to Roy in a private message and he suggested that others might enjoy it. Readers of my posts on WS forums will know that I am a huge fan of Berry Brothers and Rudd wine shop at 3 St. James Street in London. Besides being over 300 years in the same location, and therefore of mu...

1983 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port

Tasted from a half bottle, sadly this was much less enjoyable than when last tasted a year and a half ago. Medium sweet and body, I tasted honey, nougat, blueberry and candied fruit. Short finish. A good port but much less than it was when tasted above, possibly due to the fact that I'm suffering fr...

1970 Rebello Valente Vintage Port

Very light, in colour and body, almost like a beaujolais or valpolicella - you can see right through it in the glass. Nicely pale-pink halo around the rim in the glass. Medium-sweet and quite alcoholic, even after several hours in the decanter. Raspberry, bitter orange, quince, cinnamon, with some m...

It's Australian, but I forget where in Oz Angove's winery is located. They make several dry wines and some other sweet ones, I think.

1999 Angove shiraz port - Australian

Yes, of course this is not a port, no one feels more strongly about that than myself (I'm pretty anal about it, actually), but that's what it says on the label so I'm repeating it here. I didn't really want to like this wine since it offended my portloving sensibilities that it called itself port, b...

KB - maybe late April - stay tuned!

The wine I will try to post TNs for this weekend (I've misplaced the bloody notes  :x ) is the first New World so-called-port-but-no-it's-not-port that I've had that has tasted anything like the real thing.

Is it OK to post TNs on Aussie so-called ports?

Yes, I know that port comes only from Portugal. I've taken others to task on other forums, in fact, about calling dessert wines from elsewhere port. But I've just tasted a very decent Aussie dessert wine, that calls itself port, and in fact is very much like a good LBV, and was wondering if I'd be a...

My LBV rule of thumb is to buy them from lesser porthouses in lesser vintages. I don't think I've ever had (not that I've had that many) a non-vintage port from Taylor, Fonseca, Graham, Dow or any top porthouse that I've really loved, but I have really enjoyed a Noval (not so much a less house, I kn...

Perhaps Lloyds would let a well-known critic such as Robinson or Broadbent adjudicate. No doubt they know or are known to some of the Lloyds names.

Since London is the home of the famous Lloyds insurance syndicates, I wonder how much they'd charge for a formal insurance policy. Mondy spent on the big bottle would be recouped (by those who chose to buy it, at least) and participants could still bring a bottle for insurance. Best of both worlds, ...

I thought I had said I was a "maybe" but just to be clear, I cannot commit at this time. I will need to arrange a business trip at the appropriate moment if I'm to attend, and I can't do that this early.
