Re: What have you opened this week?

Vesuvio 1994 - delicious
Morgan Brothers 1977 - corked
Niepoort 1991 - tasty, but not an outstanding Vintage Port.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Had a friend who lives overseas visit the UK and had a bit of a blow-out lunch, which gave us an excuse to open some of those bottles you hold on to for the right occasion. We ended up drinking Warre 1985, Dow 1945, Warre 1945, Warre 1934, Fonseca 1927 and Martínez 1922. Lunch started at 11.30 and f...

Re: What have you opened this week?

At a port weekend this week I opened bottles of Warre 1963, Graham Malvedos 1965 and a half bottle of Kopke 50yo White.

Re: 10 Years Old or 10 Year Old?

I get round the debate by consistently using something in my notes along the lines of “Kopke 10YO”

Re: What Are Your Favorite White Ports With an Indication of Age

Andresen Whites are easy to buy in the UK so the Andresen 10YO White is my go-to drink after working in the garden on a sunny day. My favourite producer of whites with an indication of age is Quinta das Lamelas, they are just fabulous. And the best white that’s relatively easy to find is the Kopke 5...

Re: 50 year old Tawny Port with indicated age.

I know that Sandeman and Kopke have released 50YO tawny blends. Taylor have released one under the name “Golden Age”.

Does anyone have a list of the companies who currently have 50YO White and 50YO Tawnies on the market?

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

4 x Kopke 50yo White 2 x Kopke 50yo tawny Both are brilliant blends. Both are sold out. Both are way underpriced compared to their competition. I haven't even had the chance to taste these yet (though keen to do so), never mind make purchasing decisions, and they're sold out already? Bah! Kopke hav...

Re: Port price at auction

Hi Louis I don’t know exactly why your Port prices are so high, but my guess would be that it’s due to the government control over the provincial market. In the EU you can arbitrage prices really easily. If you can find a bottle of F77 being sold by someone in Germany for $100 and know the price you...

Re: What have you opened this week?

To cheer myself up after the VA spoiled half bottle of Warre 1985 I opened a bottle of Martínez 1967 this evening. Superb.

Re: What have you opened this week?

1985 Warre in a half bottle. Unfortunately it had some VA in it. Not enough to make it undrinkable, but enough to spoil the enjoyment of what should have been a nice glass of wine.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Warre Cavadinha 2001 - it’s Wednesday night and I’ve been working hard in the garden all day. Still very young with lots and lots of primary fruit, but just starting to hint at that Warre elegance it will show in 20 years.

That is currently my favourite 10yo white! I drink a couple of cases a year - with quite a lot of help from the wife.

I’m not buying much these days but did give in to temptation last week and bought single bottles of:
Kopke 1966 Colheita
Kopke 10YO White
Kopke 20YO Tawny
Kopke 50YO White (in halves)
Quinta Santa Eufemia 20YO White
Quevedo 40YO Tawny (two bottles, plus two for a friend)

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve had the chance to meet up with a few folks who really love their Port (and wine) so have been able to open some great bottles. These included; Krohn 1963 VP Cavendish 1963 late bottled vintage (from South Africa) Constantino 1963 VP Noval 1968 Colheita Unknown Ship...

Re: What have you opened this week?

We had a 1997 Horizontal tasting in the UK this week. My contributions were bottled of Martínez 1997 and Quinta de Val da Figueira 1997. Your takeaways as in which are performing well at the minute and which are going to stand the test of time? It is a vintage I personally adore. Have a soft spot f...
