Re: Using lower quality aguardente permitted?
I am surprised with the port consolidation that there hasn't been an equal effort ensuring aguardente at reasonable prices. Instead of buying every quinta available, why not buy the means to manfucature aguardente in Portugal, France, and Spain (if legal)? To make aguardente you will first need the...

Re: Will Prices Rise as Port Houses Consolidate?
Depends if your question is aimed at prices of the trade as a whole or only at the premium products the average FTLOP participant is drinking and talking about. For the trade as a whole: the average selling price for a bottle of port is still ridiculously low, 3.43 euro (per 0.75l), and that is incl...

And a great Christmas to you as well Roy.
Not much Port around where we are I'm afraid, so I don't have much to write about these days (and am far too busy otherwise), but at least we'll be moving to a more wine friendly country soon.

This link gives at least an idea of how much the "undisclosed amount" must have been: http://www.remax.pt/Quinta-Venda-Pinhao-Alijo_120421097-60?Lang=en-US Does anyone know what happened to the port produced at the quinta before the Symingtons bought it? I know their table wine went to Lav...

Re: What are your top 5 VPs from the 1994 vintage?
Tasted a good lot, and out of those these are favourites:
- Taylor
- Fonseca
- Dow
- Vesuvio
- Martinez
Except for the Martinez I'm not touching any of these as I personally think they're not in a good spot at the moment. Patience will be rewarded!

Re: SQVPs, What Are Your Favs?
That said, having been to Quinta do Noval I find it a bit amusing that the two Nacional "plots" are somehow distinct from the surrounding plots that are adjacent to them. Now you're really :stir: I often have wondered how the grape vines a few feet away are "that" different as w...

Re: SQVPs, What Are Your Favs?
I'll do this in a slightly different way, just because it's a fun excercise. I'll divide the SQ's in 2 categories and give my top 3 producers for each: –- Those from producers that normally declare a full vintage and make a SQVP in "off" years 1. Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas 2. Graham's Ma...

A case of extremely bad planning: Douro Boys Tasting on Feb 20, Wines of Portugal Tasting on March 5, and I am there Feb 24 to March 2.
At least I have my portloving friends who are willing to put up with me for a night.

Re: What Portuguese wines have you opened this week
Had the opportunity to make up the lack of consumption of Portuguese wines the last couple of weeks. Had: - Poeira 2002 (beautiful, shows no signs of weakening) - Lavradores de Feitoria Grande Escolha 2001 (still going strong and will keep for quite some time) - JM de Fonseca Hexagon (VR Terras de S...

It was Lavradores de Feitoria Meruge 2004 for me. Showed well, although it may not be 'serious' enough for proper ageing.

Re: What is your favorite Portuguese/Douro wine enjoyed in 2012 (so far)?
I had a Poeira 2002 and Lavradores de Feitoria Grande Escolha 2001 over Christmas that were both excellent and a Quinta do Passadouro Reserva 2008 earlier in the year that was very impressive as well.

Re: Guimaraens single quinta vintage port
Two bottlings...or two releases of the same bottling under different labels! The 78s i've seen (e.g.: here ) were clearly not released in 1980/1981. All i recall is that Adrian dismissed our suggestion that this was an SQVP (despite pointing out the cork). Neither is there mention of it on Fonseca'...

Re: Guimaraens single quinta vintage port
The 78 and 82 are strange ones - we had these at a Fonseca / Guimaraens vertical last year and - despite "Quinta de Cruzeiro" branding on both corks and bottles [edit - on reflection, only on corks i think] I know for sure that there are also bottles of 82 that are labeled as "Quinta...
