Wow ..THANK YOU very much for the excellent information! I think that the 1851 was definitely on the dry side and had seen better days. Still fun to drink. Good idea on collecting the old wine books!

Fairbanks "California Port"

I happened across this rare specimen (double magnum and a half size) in a local liquor store several days ago and decided for $13 I couldn't live without it. After successfully removing the screw cap intact! I decanted for 3 1/2 minutes and poured my first serving into a plastic disposable cup in my...

Sorry for the delay..don't know if it is a Garrafeira or not..I've never had anything like it as it's not the typical vintage Port bottling that I'm used to. The bottle says "Niepoort's 1940 Port" "bottled in 1945 - decanted 1970". It was very good though and did taste like it wa...

The buying cooperative idea is not dead, it just smells funny. I am happy to look into this further, in 2007 but what we are considering here, is NOTHING like what the guys have done in Burgundy. Buying one specific release in cask/bottle form, is nowhere near the same amount of work as an o...

Really? blowtorch & tongs are the way to go?
Any secrets to note so I don't screw something up?
Also where is the best place to get a pair of tongs...anyone seen any antique ones around?

Just out of curiosity, how did you open the bottle? Did a normal corkscrew work? Did the cork come out intact? Was it branded? I have a couple of older bottles of port but have never opened anything older that a 60 year old cork and I'm curious to know how to go about it, if ever I should get round...

I would be VERY interested in joining in any type of "Port buying Cooperative" as I would love to try some lesser know Ports here in the US. It's bad enough with the dollar vs pound and the shipping anywhere from f £120(air) or £60 (by sea) per case from the UK. Count me IN!

What corkscrew do you use on older (pre 70) Port bottles?

On most port bottles from 1970 or older I use a screwpull or occasionally a winged corkscrew combined with gentle pulling to remove the cork. A good percentage of the time I still have problems with the cork breaking. With most of the 77's, 83's, and 85's I have no problems using the new rabbit type...

1851 Ferreira Vintage Port

I split a bottle of 1851 Ferreira the other day with my business partner and one other friend (who posts here) at my work Christmas party. The bottle was one of several Ferreira's from the 1800's that showed up at a Christie's auction some years ago... eventually making it's way into my possesion. I...

Well, as I said, I could think of something. Unfortunately I do not have such a large group of port lovers here in SF to help me drink it. Come to think of it, I'll have to look harder for such a group. But now how am I going to get that 6L bottle??? Jay 6L with two people drinking shouldn't take m...

The only experience I've had with TCA was with a 1983 Cockburn, my friend and I noticed something was strange right away. Of course being the Port maniac that I am I still finished the bottle. It was not good though.. the best way I can describe the taste is "Port with a moldy towel".

What is the Largest Format Port Bottle Available?

I just picked up another double magnum of '77 Taylors . I have never seen any other Port from any year or maker (other than the Taylor's) in that size or a larger format bottle...has anyone else? Has a Imperial, Salmanazar, etc of Port ever existed? Has anyone even seen any other double magnums of P...

Tom the best Ports I've had in the last year were : 1. 1935 Cockburn 2. 1963 Croft (also fairly inexpensive) 3. 1955 Grahams I also just had a magnum of 1985 Grahams that was excellent after a few hours of decanting. I agree with Jay ..the 1966 Grahams is wonderful..the '66 year seems to be a bit of...
