Re: Do you know what this is for?
here is my guess....these look like shell and tube heat exchangers of some sort....but its odd that there are so many, but my guess is they are the reflux exchangers/coolers for the still that produces the brandy thats added to the Port wine?
darn looking back this was already guessed....

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?
Well, the cellar is in full swing, it leveled out at 62% humidity according to the electronic gauge I have, going to verify with a second gauge soon. Temperature stays steeady at 55.6 (even on our current 95+ F days). LOVE IT. So the buying begins in earnest. This week I added: 3 - 2003 DOW 3 - 2003 ...

Re: 1974 Taylor Quinta de Vargellas
his dad actually bought it in London, and brought them home. Can't agree more, if a Bordeaux, it would ahve been absolutely ruined for sure. Isn't that why Port was invented in the first place? one tough wine!

Re: Cellar racking and humidty
Thanks all, the temp will be controlled, target of 53. Since its inthe north east corner of the house and two walls are outer walls, it should hold well and I do not think my cooler is going to have to work very hard even in the hottest of days. I put an electrionic hygrometer in there, and it seems...

Cellar racking and humidty
I have a 4.5x10 foot room I built in my basement as a wine cellar, and am looking at cellar racking....narrowed down to a couple vendors for the "kit type" units, Vigilant and Grotto. I am going with Vigilant I think, as I can make it look like floor to cieling among other considerations. ...

1974 Taylor Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port
A good friends dad has 6 of these 1974's, the only vontage declariation I am aware of for the year of my friends birth. We drank our first of I hope 6 in a row yearly bottles last month....our general drunkenness may have affected our tastebuds, but we did a mini flight as one friend had never had p...

I suggest you surf around this website a bit and get some familiarity with terms and different styles of Port and what really constitutes Port. ie Australian Ports, are not really Ports at all. I know those types of dollars on bottles Roy mentioned seem high, but the high quality Ports are really th...

Had read in some places that this may be past its prime, so I opened a bottel I have had for a couple years at earliest opportunity...friends in town from Bermuda who told us a new little one is on its way. Anyways, was concerned on opening just grabbed a little taste, and it was very hot, concerned...

Here is my chemical engineering answer. Ethanol is not overly volatile with a boiling point of around 78 celcius, so you are only seeing the change due to diffusion into the air from the liquid state (ie physical chemistry in general tells us that molecules want to be where they currently aren't so ...

little late on the conversation, but thought as a chemical engineer, i could shed some light here. The issue in the migration of lead into the liquid is the extent/duration of contact. Since the water is more often than not flowing through the pipe and not stagnant, no issue (as long as no significa...
