If I'm not dead in 2044 I will probably be far beyond enjoying this port! I was expecting to give my 94s 30 years in the bottle, unless I win the lottery in the meantime and can afford to try some young. I've had 94 Warre from a half and it was just too rough and tough, even after a day in the...

Fantastic TNs, thanks. I have a couple of bottles and have not been tempted to open even one as I like my ports well aged. So, when do you think this will reach its peak maturity?

I haven't tasted enough to really know, but based on the reviews I've read, and the 2 I've tasted (SW Madelena and Taylor) I'd have to say 1995. There is a logic here as well, since 1994 was such a blockbuster, and 91/92 a split vintage, most houses were probablya bit skittish about declaring anothe...

This bottle was the last great port deal available in Ontario, about 5 years ago. It was originally sold for CAD$299, I got mine on sale for CAD$209. I should have bought more than one but five years ago I was still buying "only a few bottles to lay down for the future"

Another vote for Cruz Ruby, tasted from a plastic 50ml. bottle bought at Heathrow Duty Free, before I knew better.

The 1896 Dow was included in a 1999 Dow vertical tasting done by James Suckling of Wine Spectator (who would probably like to attend as well, if he could). His tasting notes follow: "Amazingly youthful from its dark ruby color to its intensely fruity aftertaste, this old Port defies the odds. S...

I've actually been a bit disappointed by the 83s I've had so far (Graham. Dow, Warre) and am hopeful that the magical 25 year threshhold will make a difference. If not, I'll let them sit to 30. I have read that the 85s should mature sooner than the 83s, and I don't think the 85s have peaked yet, but...

I'm surprised that any top 77 would be fading so quickly, though I've heard others say the same thing. We had a 77 Warre a year ago that many thought was past its best, but I liked it just fine. A group of us from the Wine Spectator Forums met in London a year and a half ago to taste 1970 and 1977 T...

We portlovers on the WS Forums have discussed this a couple of times there, and a group of us believe that most ports are actually better a day or two after being decanted and first tasted. We decided this more by accident than design, as when we cannot finish a bottle the night we open it (yes, thi...

Not quite 10 bottles for me last year. It would have been more but I like my port well and truly aged and most of my bottles are from 1983 or later. I drink them on occasion, but prefer to stick with single quintas and halves while waiting for at least 25 years from vintage to pass. Plus, few of my ...

The 1977 Quarles Harris is quite good value for money. I've had it as both its own and under Berry Brothers and Rudd's own label.

1980 Quarles Harris Vintage Port

CAD$79. As with at least the last dozen or more bottles I've opened, this one was much better a couple of days later than the day I opened it, even with 8+ hours in the decanter. I tasted (and in fact, am tasting even as I type) sweet bing cherries, candied plums and Christmas pudding, but with some...

Thanks Roy. It's nice to be amongst my own (portloving) kind! :D Our travel plans are very much at the "thinking about it" stage, but I'm determined to get to BC and Seattle if only to offline with some WS Forums pals who I see too rarely. I would also love to reconnect with Blobby, who ha...

Offline question for Roy

We're thinking of a visit to Vancouver and Seattle this summer and I was wondering if you ever offline or host tastings or whatever. If you've ever visited the Wine Spectator forums you will know that I enjoy a sip of port every once in a while, and own a few bottles. It would be a great trea...
