Re: TN Forum Challenge - 2 mos., 685 and counting!

I have a question of procedure. When one re-tastes a Port should they update their first tasting note or create a new tasting note. I'm planning to revisit Graham's 2003 LBV soon as well as Taylor's 20 year old tawny, both of which I have posted tasting notes on in the past. New note or add a new po...

Re: What's your favorite Port glass?

I am reminded once again that my likes and dislikes, fads and fancies, enthusiasms and must-haves are not the rule in the universe at large. Peter: you probably know, I suspect, that this is part of your pleasure in these things, that the rest of the universe is largely oblivious to them. I have ex...

Re: Oakaphobe?

I visited the Stony Hill winery last year. This is a small winery in the northern Napa Valley (on the west side of the valley on a -- you guessed it -- stony hill). They have long made unoaked chardonnay. They prefer to not use oak and to not encourage malolactic fermentation in making their chardon...

Re: What is your favorite sport to participate in?

Mountain backpacking and mountain hunting, for example hunting for elk close to treeline. To stay in shape for these occasional activities I do a lot of exercising, but I would not call those the sports.

Re: Why Ports over table wines?

Personally, I drink more table wine than Port. I associate a good table wine with eating a good dinner. I associate Port with cooler weather -- November through February -- and drinking either at the end of a meal (where a table wine has been consumed) or more likely while sitting at the table readi...

Re: Lots of Port consumed, far less tasting notes

I provide a tasting note almost every time I have a different Port. I'm not drinking much Port now because it is summer in Texas, and Port doesn't come much to mind at this time of year. If I happen to have some ruby Port under less than ideal circumstances where I don't get a chance to pay attentio...

2004 Ramos Pinto LBV Port

2004 Ramos Pinto LBV: unfiltered, bottled 2008 Decanted and found sediment in the last 2 ounces in the bottom of the bottle. Washed out bottle and found some sediment cake come free from the wall of the bottle and wash out into the sink. Driven cork. I tasted 3 hours after decanting. Garnet red colo...

Re: LBV recommendations wanted

I have drunk and enjoyed the Graham 2003 LBV (filtered) and the Fonseca 2003 LBV (unfiltered). I have also drunk and enjoyed the Noval 2001 LBV (unfiltered) (NOT Quinta do Noval . . . just Noval LBV). I have also drunk some other LBVs and have yet to be disappointed, so you have some ideas where to ...

Re: What is your favorite grape and region for WHITE wine?

I probably drink Alsatian whites the most often and enjoy them the most. Other than Port, I always drink wine with an appropriate food combination (I also drink German white wines such as Spatlesen and Auslesen rieslings by themselves, but I don't drink these often). I like to cook Alsatian foods, a...

Re: Women Abusing Alcohol ... say it ain't so!

Interesting article. I suppose some of this acculturation to the drinking scene goes on at US universities too. As far as drinking to assuage feelings of "losing it" or being over the hill, perhaps that is just a kind of vanity. Certainly it can't come as a surprise that we age and that ou...

20 Year Old Tawny Port by Taylor Fladgate

Caveat: this tasting note is relative to my first ever sampling of Tawny Port!!! The bouquet was distinctive and persistent. Often when I sample LBVs the bouquet fades away as I continue to taste the Port. Not in this case. As a novice to this type of Port, I found that I could not readily identify ...

Re: DRC problem

That hurts to even think about! Perhaps there is something inherently impractical about this kind of crime that has heretofor prevented more skilled criminals from making the attempt. If this is the case, then only dumb criminals will make the attempt, and it can be hoped that they will be easily ap...

I have been lurking, reading the posted questions and answers with great interest, as I imagine have many others. It really is an excep...

Re: Taking advantage of the wine glut

I find this sort of interesting. Where I see a problem is buying a bottle of this stuff for setting aside for maturing 10 years. I don't think I would do that with one of these wines, from a lack of knowledge of the wine in the bottle. I would only buy a bottle for pop n'pour purposes. On the other...

Re: Touriga Nacional - is it the way to go?

I wonder what "Graham's vineyards" means? Graham is a trade name of the Symington group which also produces Warre, Smith-Woodhouse, Quarles-Harris, and others, so it is arguable the vineyards aren't Graham's but Symington's vineyards. Does this apply only to Graham's vintage Port or also t...

Re: How to "taste" port

Tim: Possibly you are asking how to drink Port so it shows at its best and so you get the most from your drinking pleasure. If this is the nature of your question, there are two components of the answer -- how to prepare the Port for drinking and then how to drink it. Depending on the Port you are d...
