Re: 2015 VP's, will you buy?

As for the 2015s I will not be buying any. I stopped at buying with the 2000/2003 vintage. At a time when I had the opportunity to buy Smith Woodhouse at rock bottom prices I opted for the '96 Madelena instead of '07 VP. Mahmoud. Same here, I only have a handful of 2007, less than 2 cases from 2000...

Re: Save the grapes: Gould Campbell

I'm thinking this is already a done deal. The Symington family page lists their brands at the bottom of their web page. Missing is Gould Campbell and Smith-Woodhouse. I would have hoped that a young up and coming member of the family who would like to do things his/her way would take over the brands...

Opened a 1983 Gould-Campbell VP last night. We will finish it tonight, but I did not make Hasenpfeffer, which I love.

Re: Have you ever done something dumb?

My first thought was, like you mean in the last hour or just the total for today [dash1.gif] ?

However after reading your post I can admit worse than that after breaking a bottle while arranging things (I managed to save a bit over half).

Re: Birth year Ports laid down for your kids.

Did I read that correctly, 3 sons in 1983? That's a lot of 1983 you needed to buy  1986 has some really nice VP's (mostly SQVP's). Hard to find now-a-days, but generally worth getting if you run across them. We only had twins in '83, they were children #2 & 3, to clarify. Having two was su...

Re: Birth year Ports laid down for your kids.

#1 Daughter 1982, she has no interest in Port, so no problem. #2,3 Sons 1983, We opened a Dow's on their 21st birthday that I had laid down upon release. I have enough '83's to open on their birthday for quite a while. #4 Daughter 1986, she likes sweeter whites anyways, but my cellar has more '85's ...

Casa de Santa Eufemia 30 Year Old Port

Bottled 2009, this is a fairly rare tawny here in the U.S.. The color was lighter than I expected and had a rose tint to it. It doesn't seem to have been harmed by 9 years in the bottle and tasted fresh, with a definite orange zesty acidity up front. The nose was intoxicating and earthy, again with ...

Re: It is about time ...

I don't think it's a waste of time and money because this is all about money and the right to sell low end Port exclusively. Rather than out-compete the competition with superior products and marketing they use the government, which to me makes them look like bullies. No one is confused that a "...

Re: What Port(s) have you purchased this week?

Nice score. Are the Sandeman's in the new bottle with the glass stopper? Thanks, I decided 20% off already decent prices was worth loading up a bit. The first thing I noticed when I picked them up is the Sandemans are indeed in the new bottles. I did not notice a glass stopper as it will be a bit b...

Re: It is about time ...

I don't know much about how protectionism works and why it's needed but this seems to me to be a case of misplaced outrage. Port wine sales have been declining and this is going to help how? I'm leaning towards stop making common names in use for over a century "protected" . I'm sure they ...

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?

After talking to an expert yesterday I got a recommendation for a Madeira that pairs perfectly with a cigar. :scholar: After my education I checked wine searcher and the brand new Total Wine store nearby has it in stock. Not only that, they are having an online 20% discount for old world wines until...

Re: What was your best port PURCHASE in 2016?

I think the pair of 1966 Rocha VP or the 1963 Taylor VP could be considered my best purchases of the year, but they are still an unknown as they sit in the cellar awaiting their fate. However, what is known is the Quinta do Crasto 2011 LBV. I was able to pickup up a case for $16 a bottle delivered t...

Re: Cellar worthy Ports

Nice resurrection of a thread, as I was not here the first time around. Oldest current "port like" wine are domestics from the 70's. Since Dad had the cellar (and moved it to Oregon) all my cellared wines were only opened on occasion. The first VP I bought was a Dow's 1983 for my twin sons...

Do Christmas presents count? I got a very cool Port gift box. Graham's Selection of Finest Ports. 5 20cl bottles, Fine White, 2009 LBV, 6 Grapes, 10yo, 20yo Tawnies. In screw cap bottles filled in 2015.

Re: Large format bottles of Madeira

Not sure if a magnum of Madeira has the same cache for me as port. Port magnums are gone in one sitting; I doubt I would do that with magnum of Madeira. If am not doing that, then what is point outside of the coolness? wouldn't it reduce the price? two 750s typically cost more than one magnum, just...
