Re: The Majority of Women ...

Despite her renown — the American Sommelier Association declared her the Best Sommelier in the World in 2002 — she said her fellow male Master Sommeliers pounce on the list. Good for her. There are several assumptions I could make about why the list is usually handed to the man, or why the man is u...

Re: Another new advancement for wineries

Not a bad idea! I never thought of something like this for wineries. I will soon be experiencing the Groupon concept firsthand, as the catering business where I work will be offering a Groupon for cakes sometime this summer. So it will be my job to make the zillions of cakes when the orders start fl...

Re: Sediment on Toast for Breakfast ...

He found her to be a little old lady who, on being asked about her enjoyment of port replied that she didn't like port at all and poured it down the sink, saving only the sediment to have on bread for her tea. What a funny idea. Wouldn't it be hard to get that much sediment out of the bottle? (At l...

July 2010 VT: Anything from Graham's

I thought I would make a separate topic for this so people who drop by will be able to see the VT theme for July without looking at the other post. I hope I'm not stepping on anybody's toes. [foilhat.gif] In light of the recent discussion about the 2005 Graham's LBV, July's theme is anything from Gr...

Re: Where to start with Madeira

Thanks for the recommend. I looked at their site, and the label looks familiar--not sure where I've seen it before. Based on those prices, it looks like my finances probably prefer Port as well. It will be a few weeks before I can buy wine of any kind, as all my funds went into my Quevedo orde...

Where to start with Madeira

I have never tried Madeira before but would like to. I had planned to attend a Madeira tasting at a local wine shop a few weeks ago, but it was canceled. Supposedly it was to be rescheduled, but I have heard nothing more about it. I decided I don't want to wait around for them, and I'd like to try s...

Re: Any theme for June?

In light of the recent discussion about the 2005 Graham's LBV, might I suggest that July's theme be anything from Graham's, especially the 2005 LBV if you can get it?

(The LBV discussion can be found here: http://www.fortheloveofport.com/ftlopfo ... =1&t=10027 )

Re: Word definition? Torrefacted

Yes, that's funny that we're reading the same part. I had to look back and see where it was, but it's quintas in the Roncao Valley that he mentions. "The British shippers refer to 'roasted Roncao' and after a hot summer it is not uncommon for these wines to take on more than a hint of torrefact...

I happened across this term while reading Port and the Douro the other night, so I was glad that I had learned what it meant. Thanks all.

Re: Word definition? Torrefacted

Thanks for clarifying, Roy. And note to self: If visiting the UK for a Port tasting, perhaps I better try not get invited to Derek's for dinner. At least not if he's cooking.

Re: Word definition? Torrefacted

Sounds like the common thread here is heat/roasting. That must have been what he meant, a caramelized sort of flavor. Maybe sometime Roy will chime in to confirm.

Re: The Next Great "Subscriber's Only" Buyer's Op

Yep Glenn, I did send in my order early this morning via email. Am quite excited, as this is the first case I have ever purchased. It is somewhat disappointing that it won't be shipped until late October, at least for my order. Even though the weather here is dismal and not at all summer-like, appar...

Word definition? Torrefacted

Hi all, I am having a hard time finding a definition for the word "torrefacted" (at least in reference to wine/Port). Roy used it in his description of the Quevedo Colheita that is on offer for the buying op, and I'm curious what it means. I know Roy is away, but I figured someone else mig...

Unfortunately the Madeira tasting was canceled, to be rescheduled for sometime next month. So I hope to be able to report on it then.

Well Peter, it sounds like you are far more adventurous than it first seemed. :D I had pizza for dinner tonight. Can you guess what the toppings were? My favorite combo, of course.
