For the big names, I am a big fan of Noval tawny port. LBV's as well. [cheers.gif]
You don't see their Colheitas much, but they are top notch as well. A bit steep in price but brand name plays a factor as well.

Re: What have you opened this week?

Tomorrow will be some Bollinger, Pierre Girardin white Burgundy, Markus Molitor Spätlese and some 2013 Barbaresco. However as the finishing bottle I will crack this open for our guests. Hope it will preform as well as it have in the past. Been 2-3 years since I last tasted it, where it was stunning....

Re: What have you opened this week?

The 40YO Noval is right up there among the best. I totally agree. So for current bottling 40YO it actually might be the best, as the new Romaniera as Glenn mentions doesn't quite have the magic of the older one. Though still really good. 2 Producers that might have some consideration is Blackett and...

Re: What have you opened this week?

Last night was a '95 Fonseca VP. Much better for a pop and pour than the '85 Fonseca last week was. Amazing amount of sediment. Needed to move around the cheesecloth to funnel it all through. Soft sediment. The '95 started out rich, sweet and fruity. I don't recall the '85 as being as fruity-sweet ...

They have been inspired by Leclerc-Briant that does that exact same thing with their Abyss Cuvée Champagne.

I wrote about it on my blog https://winebywalker.dk/?p=193 (delete the link mods if this against policy)

Re: What Unopened Bottle Have You Had in Your Cellar the Longest?

I gotta be honest---I am dissapointed there isn;t someone saying I bought a case of 1983 on release in 1985 or such. Still, I love and appreciate everyone's responses. Seems like most on FTLOP are like me, came to Port in the last 20 years or so. Cheers!! I was 4 years old [yahoo.gif] Age is a fact...

Re: 2021 Vintage Port declaration

Sad about the Covid and Vesuvio. 2021 is the birth year of my daughter and Vesuvio is my favorite house. My son had better luck with 2018.

Well gotta go Noval atleast for the 1 x case. The second is still up in the air. (I wont buy SQVP. And yes I don't view Vesuvio as a SQVP like Malvedos etc.)

Re: What have you opened this week?

50YO Maynard's 1982 Andresen Colheita I've had the '82 Andresen Colheita before (it's good), but how was the 50YO Maynard's? I really like it. It has a nimble and lean structure, a bit surprising for a 50YO. But it does not hold back on the palate with loads of brown sugar, burnt caramel and toffee...

Re: What have you opened this week?

My last old bottle of 40YO from Romaneira.

Was bottled in 2011, old label with red and gold rim. Stood sharp and precise in the glass. What a treat. Alas an era comes to an end for my part

Maynard's released a 50YO Tawny last year. I tasted it in July when I was in Porto. Very lean and acidic for a 50YO and very nice.

2 x 1990 Presidential Colheitas a my local supermarket. Marked down to $30 each. I grabbed em fast and paid as quick as possible. 0.75cl and bottled in 2021. Doesn't get much better than that for a 30 year old port.

Re: Corked bottle refund

Poor customer service. If you have a customer come back with a newly purchased bottle that is faulty you instantly reimburse them and offer your apologies. If it is in the lodge I would even offer them a complimentary glass of port on the house. Make the customer become an ambassador for the brand a...

Re: What have you opened this week?

1985 Ferreira VP. Was darn near clear in the glass! Looked like a 100+ years old. Cork was fine, was not leaking. Seems to be a thing with Ferreira where some bottles just evolve to clean port. Seen it a on a few vintages where one or two bottles in a case are like this. [shrug.gif] I've had simila...

Re: What have you opened this week?

2000 Croft VP. Had taken some with my Coravin 2 years ago. So decided to finish this post Christmas. Dark maraschino cherries on the nose with some eucalyptus & mint as well. Very refreshing and vibrant still. A little hot on the entry lingering into the mid palate. Nice concentration of fruit t...
