Re: Revisiting old posts you made on FTLOP
D. To Glenn "Dr. Tawny" Elliott, I remember the very early days of your Port tasting, not the first ... but early. And Madeira too. You swore Madeira was not your thing. But I kept "forcing you" to drink it. For years you claimed, "It is ok, but not my thing. I mean the swe...

I've always wanted to try the 1920 Cossart-Gordon but have never had the opportunity. Seems like I now need to try this 1910 D'Oliveiras!

Re: Newsletter #116 and the DR PORT Buying opPORTunity
I have been scouring the net for DR in the US to no avail, so I wasn't going to let this opportunity slip by. I would have bought more but the Mrs... I am curious though Roy, why no 40 y.o. Tawny or White? Or is that next year's buying op? :D Sadly, DR no longer makes a 40 Year Old Tawny Port. With...

Re: Richard Mayson on Graham's The Stone Terraces
Then there is TCA. How do you score those wines Glenn? ;-) Those are all good points. Ones that I recognize from judging barbecue, where we (at least theoretically) have a standard and a process by which to judge what the teams have produced for us. I'm not a professional wine judge, though. My &qu...

Re: Richard Mayson on Graham's The Stone Terraces
Glenn - Richard tasted the 2011 in 2023 when it had had the benefit of 10 years of bottle age. He rated it a perfect wine. What’s your view? Do you agree? I don't believe that I have ever given a Ruby Port a score of 100. I can think of 6 Tawny Ports off the top of my head, so it might be 7 or 8 in...

Re: Port in a Coffee Mug
I've wandered around cruise ships drinking Tawny Port out of an opaque coffee mug. You're not supposed to drink your own alcohol outside of your room, but no one suspects a cup of coffee no matter the time of day.

Re: What have you opened this week?
Inspired by a friend’s recent experience with this Port, I opened one yesterday. It’s finally starting to mature. It’s damn delicious! Yes they're starting to round out nicely at nearly 40 years old. I do still see some bottle variation, which I suspect is what Moses is seeing. Some bottles a...

Re: Richard Mayson on Graham's The Stone Terraces
It is a superb VP. I think that I also scored it 96 during the last "vertical" that I held. It's a huge monster of a Port and it's only going to get better over the decades, but it is surprisingly approachable right now. $125 is a great price, and these will easily out-live all of us. I've...

Richard Mayson on Graham's The Stone Terraces
A nice article in World of Fine Wine. https://worldoffinewine.com/tasting-notes/grahams-stone-terraces-2021-vintage-port Even after all these years, I get a jolt of excitement whenever my scores match those of a professional. I've had the opportunity to taste with Roy on many occasions, but I'm stil...

Re: Revisiting old posts you made on FTLOP
Yeah the uptick in Madeira prices definitely started before 2017. I can still recall when the 1875 D'Oliveiras Malvasia Family Reserve was $300 and I thought that was crazy expensive. That would have been circa 2010, and even then Roy would tell me how they used to be $175. By the time I finally gav...

Re: Tappit Hen vs. Tregnum
Glenn, The neck shape doesn't have anything to do with a traditional TH. It's the very top of it. That large overgrown rounded bulb. Also, the old ones were handmade and were not always exactly the same volume. They ranged from about 2L to 2.3L, if memory serves me. Ah... right, I knew that but got...
