Not planned, and no doubt a sign of mental instability, I do have a 1996 Malvedos I am planning on opening next January for the 10 year birthday of my dog. Over the past few years having a birthday for my dog, which started as a joke, has turned into an annual event where he gets more present...

Good Port that is not Port?

...or at least not PORTO . My wife is not a porto drinker. Every once in a while though we do find something she likes. Most recently a Colheita '77 from Rocha with a creme brulee. I can think of only two true VPs she has poured for herself with no coaxing. Aside from these two, she did like a rando...

Never had that one.

The younger Yalumba dessert wines though are ones I look for when out to eat. VP by the glass is a huge risk so I often go tawny/colheita or something like this. The Yalumba is a good wine for the price so perhaps this will be nice as well.

Hopefully you can report back!

The screwpull version is nice for young wine. A metal version has been available at Costco for about two years now for around $12.

Anything older or questionable though demands an Ahso (sic?). I HATE having cork remnant in my wine so this is a life-saver.

Derek, I think it is. Every bottle of any win is different depending upon the company and locale in which it is enjoyed. I think a glass in London on a cold evening would b much better than a warm day lounging on the beach in Grand Cayman. Same wine? Yes. Different though. I think just as wine can c...

Very good suggestion, few follow this though. I think that most collector, if they do consider it much, look at what they already own and consider drinking windows. They don't make the leap to using this same information, and filling gaps, for purchases. Wine is one of those funny purchases where co...

Port consumption by location??

Read the article from the NYT that Mario had reposted and the tagline about the temperature. So, aside from anecdotal data, does anyone know what the port comsumption is like in various locales as related to climate? I always presume that here in the desert of Arizona there are fewer drinkers of por...

Nope.

Saw a picture on the website of Golden West though; does that count?

For $1800 we could chip and buy a bottle. Nice topper to a dinner party sometime.

I think that all ports should be opened, straw inserted, and the port should be sucked out as quickly as possibly allowing for minimal aeration. If you do not have a straw, either drink directly from the bottle or pouring into a left over SuperGulp cup from 7-11 and chug it as fast as possible while...

I think it depends somewhat upon the wine but far more upon the person.

Some like it some don't. Of course the choc is as important as the wine.

Very different animals. For port I look for the best deals on new vintages and provenence on older. I am willing to pay a more for provence, to a point. I am also willing to wait for a good deal as they come by enough that splurging on lesser deals do not make sense. For madiera, good vintage madeir...

Problem with Port

While not in the offline capital of the world (or even thr country) I have attended many offlines here that included stellar people, and some halfway decent wines. ;) My issue with bringing port is that, seen as a dessert wine, port is laways pored last. While I love finishing off with a great port,...

Favorite Port pairings?

Anyone want to discuss their favorite port pairings? I have different pairing for each type of port but for the very best of each type tend to drink it alone. I thought about this the other day though as I finished off, on the second day, a bottle of Quinta do Vesuvio 2001. I have BBQ'd some porterh...

Has anyone here had Colheita from the same producer, same year that was bottled at different times? I am interested in the differences between the two bottlings. Would perhaps also be important who the producer is. I know that Dirk Niepoort feels his age well in the bottle where others would say Dri...

Another reason to love Madeira

Shipping year round! Living in the desert I have a good deal of wine stored for me at various retailers throughout the year, followed by a flurry of shipping in late Nov through early Feb. Of course with madeira, as long as it soes not get so hot as to raise the cork, a quick shipment in the other m...

I would love to pick up some of the QPR steals but distribution is sometimes an issue.

I have seen Pocas and a few others in my area but for the most part, even online, I see te major houses well represented. Portal? Where can I get this?

Since it seems that the raw materials will be good enough for many to delare, I will be happy either way. One question, what will be the difference in the final wines depending upon whether a major house declares or uses their second label? The SQVPs are sometimes referred to as "the backbone&q...
