Songs that mention Port Wine

Post by Mika H »

Do you know any? Let me start with this: Frank Zappa & The Mothers - WPLJ (White Port and Lemon Juice) from the album "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" (1970).

How about The Tragically Hip - The Dire Wolf, from the album In Violet Light: "The desultory sea grew more so through the night, and made one think of tawny ports,"

"Composing" from the Boys Night Out album Trainwreck. it's a concept album about a guy who kills his wife in his sleep and is driven mad because of it. the song is about him purposefully poisoning his remaining friends and family.
the song doesn't necessarily stand alone, but it makes sense lyrically and musically within the context of the album.

"So come over to my house
Catch up over dinner
We are having strychnine and sirloin
Port wine and paint thinner"

"Alcohol" from The Kinks album Muswell Hillbillies

"Barley wine, pink gin,
He'll drink anything,
Port, pernod or tequila,
Rum, scotch, vodka on the rocks,
As long as all his troubles disappeared."

It's white Port that is mentioned again:
Guy Clark: "Let Him Roll"

"It was white Port, that put that look in his eye
That grown men get when they need to cry
And he sat down on the curb to rest
And his head just fell down on his chest"

"Well he was elevator man in a cheap hotel
In exchange for the rent on a one room cell
He's old in years beyond his time
Thanks to the world, and the white Port wine"

I think that Prince's "The Holy River" mentions Port wine too.

it's not a song, but a friend quoted this to me:

" ‘The best means of effecting the required absorption is to remove the heart from the living subject, to reduce it to ashes, and to mingle them with about a pint of some red wine, preferably port." M.R. James from the story "Lost Hearts"

Not Port, but Madeira, is mentioned in Mark Knopflers' song: Privateering: "to lay with pretty women, and drink Madeira wine ..."

For Madeira, there is always this little tune, although less than complimentary about port..

my mother just told me this!

How do you know which is the left side of a ship?

When the Sherry is gone, the Port is left!

Hah. That's a good way to remember it.

A friend who used to be in the RN said the phrase taught is:

'Is there any red Port left'

(The green light should be on the right (starboard) side)

You always pass the Port to the left.

Also, for the less nerdy, "port" and "left" are the two shorter words.

"The Wine Song" by The Youngbloods

One snort of Ruby Port really rings the bell
Then a glass of Muscatel sets my head up well
Then this sweetest bottle of cheapest sherry wine
I say goodbye to my mind
