Recap of a Port Club Meeting

Post by John M. »

We met last night to taste 4 VPs and 3 LBVs (two sets, tasted blind. The VPs were the first set--members knew two were from the same producer. Only two guessed correctly which pair.); all were decanted or opened 11 hours prior. None had any bottle issues and all showed very well. Hard to call a WOTN as the Madelena, Vargellas and 2000 Sao Pedro had similar responses, yet a straw poll found the 2000 Sao Pedro the favorite. Of the LBVs the Crasto was the favorite. Here are the Tasting Notes:

1995 Smith Woodhouse Madelena Vintage Port - Faded brick Red with dark core. A soft nose of grass. Hints of licorice and white pepper with even more plum, it drinks very easy with a soft finish. Hints of chocolate. Exquisite.

92 Points

1996 Taylor Fladgate Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port - Brick red core with pastel pink on the rim. Touch of brandy on the nose. Tastes dry with a touch of spicy honey and cherry, ends a little earthy. Thin mouthfeel and seems simple for a VP.

89 Points

1996 Sao Pedro Das Aguias Vintage Port - Red burnt orange with a pastel orange rim--looks older than it is. Sweet aromas of strawberry and raisin. Lightly sweet with thin viscosity. Mild and subtle flavors with an extended peppery finish and touch of prune. Nice drinker.

90 Points

2000 Sao Pedro Das Aguias Vintage Port - Blood red with rose rim. Aromas of deep dry grape. Still showing lots of primary dark fruits. Touch of spice laden with raspberry, hint of tar, minerals, crushed grape. Very nice, easy moderate finish. This should be aged a while longer. A beautiful Port.

93 Points

2007 Quinta do Noval Single Quinta LBV
- Deep crimson color. Smells like a fruit bomb. Aged fruits--plum and berry. Moderate finish.

89 Points

2011 Quinta do Crasto LBV - Dark purple red with Magenta rim. Aromas of grassy grape. Total lush fruit bomb. Puckery finish with touches of rhubarb followed by mouth watering. While great now, definitely has aging potential to even better heights.

90 Points

2011 Taylor Fladgate LBV - Dark core with purple rim. Taste starts out small then grows to rhubarb and concord grape. Tannic dry finish with hints of pepper. Simple yet fine.

If you paid about what I paid, the 2000 Sao Pedro Das Aguias Vintage Port sounds like a great QPR; and the 1996 is still a reasonable value. Alas, there are no more listed at winebid.com.
