1980 Gould Campbell Vintage Port

Post by John Sel »

On opening. Colour is opaque black red nearly to the rim where there is the merest hint of paleness and attenuation. On the nose there is brooding, deep dark fruit which gives up hints of damson and is overlaid with a rich woody spiciness. Gradually, walnut and menthol emerge from the mix. On the palate there is a big dollop of warm round fruit which is underpinned by grippy tannin and acidity. After 20 hours, the wine has hit its stride - the same elements, but in a more relaxed mode. Excellent persistence on the nose, while on the palate the wine has expanded. The flavour is now mouthfilling and the overall impression is of much greater composure. There is a keenly focused thread of dark fruit, tannin and acidity which offers ample pleasure. Fully ready I would suggest, but in fantastic shape for a 35 year old wine from a supposedly lesser year. Surely there is plenty of life still ahead. This wine, taken with the Dow, Graham and Warre, surely point to 1980, being an outstanding year for the Symingtons, whatever the weaknesses elsewhere. 95 points.
