1950 Sandeman Vintage Port

Post by Glenn E. »

From the FTLOP 5th Anniversary Party at the Holiday Inn Issaquah, July 31, 2010.

I was having an off palate night, possibly caused by dinner at Cucina Cucina, so my ratings were significantly lower than everyone else's. In some cases I have reverted back to my initial impressions because, in retrospect, those seem more appropriate given how others were scoring.

1950 Sandeman Vintage Port

Color: Dark tawny with some red left.
Nose: Sweet Christmas spices. Rich, round sugar. Turpentine?
Palate: Some tannins, edgy. On the dry side for Port (which is typical to me for Sandeman). Decent fruit.
Finish: Medium length. Finish seems younger than the Port's age.

Score: 84 points. Either I have generally bad luck with Sandeman, or I'm just not fond of the style. I've now had 8 different older Sandeman VPs (including the 1904 and 1957 at this tasting and the 1960, 1963, 1966, 1970, and 1977 at a mini-vertical in NYC) and have not been impressed by any of them.
