1968 Krohn Coheita Port

Post by Glenn E. »

In July this year, Premier Cru started having flash sales on a variety of Krohn Ports. I'm not on their mailing list, but several other FTLOPers are and so we all bought in heavily. These Colheitas were on sale a couple of different times at different prices, but I averaged about $50/bottle for the case I picked up. But really, even their normal retail price of $90 is a great value (though they are out of stock as of the time of this post.)

1968 Krohn Colheita
bottled 2008

Color: Brown, fades through orange and then yellow with a very faint green tint near the rim. Murky, but that's possibly due to having been recently shipped.

Nose: Spirit, mahogany, faint light lime, sweet resin, cigar box, and a bit of caramel.

Palate: Rich confectioner's sugar, great acidity, loads of citrus (lemony but not quite lemon), some caramel. Smooth and creamy, but not like an S. Leonardo. Body weight is medium at best. There's a very faint bitterness that permeates the flavor and gives it an almost savory impression. Perhaps some sandalwood? An absence of brown sugar is notable.

Finish: Torrefacted notes, eventually some grape skin and apple skin. Not especially long, but not short either. Not a finish you would pause to enjoy... basically unremarkable.

Score: 92 points. This needs a long decant to help the spirit settle down, but once settled it is very nice. It is a bit thin for such an old Colheita and the spirit is a little distracting. It also can't stand up to another Port - in my case an S. Leonardo 30-yr old. Tasted on its own it's very nice, but against the S. Leonardo it is thin and spirity. I will have to remember to drink these solo rather than at tastings.

Do I spot a potential theme running through your upcoming tasting notes? ;)

Perhaps. :)

S. Leonardo is pretty much my standard for TWAIOA, in part because I now have such a good supply of it. But that could change as I run out of S. Leonardo but still have a good supply of this Krohn I just received!
