Bartholomew, great to have your here. My question comes a bit late, sorry for that.

You are fairly familiar with the Portwines from Ferreira. I would like to know your assessement on their Vintage Port of the years 1997 and especially 1999. Two one should go for?

Thanks.[cheers.gif]

Michael,

I am sorry that Mr. Broadbent has neglected us since his week here so I will do my best to respond in his stead.

The 1999 VP by Ferreira is one of the top wines of the vintage along with the Quinta do Portal in my opinion, so this would be my choice over the 1997, which is a nice VP but I prefer the younger version.

Roy,

my fault being too late.
Many thanks for your kind reply. Wow, one of the top VP along with Quinta do Portal ( which you rated 93 or 94 if I remember correctly). That's a very nice improvement for 1999 Ferreira VP.

The latest news:

Michael Broadbent has won his case against the publishers of "Billionaire's Vinegar" with an out of court settlement.

Hopefully, Bartholomew will stop by and tell us more about this outcome. [cheers.gif]

Whoops! Sorry, didn't mean to neglect the Board. I was traveling, went to Nashville, among other places. More about that soon. Meanwhile, I guess I need to learn how to set up an alert so that I am notified when anyone posts on this thread.

The press release reads:
The libel action centred on the book The Billionaire’s Vinegar, the subject of which was the provenance of a number of bottles of wine said to have been owned by Thomas Jefferson. The book made allegations which suggested that Mr Broadbent had behaved in an unprofessional manner in the way in which he had auctioned some of these bottles and that his relationship and dealings with Hardy Rodenstock, who discovered the original collection, was suspected of being improper.

In a statement read out in open court today, Random House apologised unreservedly for making the allegations and accepted that they were untrue. It has given an undertaking not to repeat the allegations and paid Mr Broadbent undisclosed damages.

Commenting on the settlement Sarah Webb, head of Russell Jones & Walker’s Defamation department, who acted for Mr Broadbent said:

“The Billionaire’s Vinegar made highly damaging claims about my client that seriously compromised both his professional and personal reputation. We are delighted that Random House has today accepted that these allegations are totally without foundation and avoided the need to proceed to a full trial. My client is relieved that the good name he has built up over many years as one of the country’s leading wine experts has been fully restored.”

Last Thursday, my father was awarded the 2009 Norman M. Lipman Lifetime Achievement Award from L'Ete du Vin. Unfortunately, my father was unable to attend the ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee but I was honored to accept it on his behalf.
On this YouTube clip, I accept the Award from Jimmy Collins of the Nashville Wine Press.

I think you'll be amused by how often he drinks Port and Madeira in a day!

This magazine is truly beautiful. Apart from the fact that there is a feature interview with me on pages 35-38, the photography is stunning and there are other great articles too.
