What was your finest Madeira purchasing coup in 2010

Post by Marco D. »

For me it was finding a bottle of the legendary 1862 Borges Terrentez "HMB".

I would love to try it beside the undated Borges "HMB" Terrentez that The Rare Wine Company sold a while back...

Finally winning an auction and getting the 1875 Barbeito Malvasia. I guess that obnoxious little $#!+ who kept stealing my bids finally believed me when I said I would kill him if I ever found him, so he stayed out of that bidding.
Thanks Roy

Managed to get a bottle each of the 1802 Acciaioly Terrantez and the 1795 Barbieto Terrantez. Also got an Avery's 1846 Borges Terrantez.
I've noticed a lot of old Madeira going to auction this past year. Poor economy bringing out the goods?
Marco, maybe we should get together a Terrantez tasting!

That would be a great goal for 2011... If I'm in the same room as the 1802 T, I promise to open up something special as well.

1968 D'Oliveira are the best bottles I bought this year. Not really fair, as they are sitting for me at the local liquor store to pick up. I just bought in November.

The best deal was a case of Broadbent 10 Boal for $290 a case shipped. I wish that deal was still around.

A case of H. M. Borges 10-year malmsey for $280. And 1976 Blandy's terrantez for $96 a bottle.

Eric,

I bought it at Marty's Fine Wines in Newton, MA. They gave me 20% off a case. Ball Square Wines (http://www.ballsquarefinewines.com/) in Somerville, MA, lists Borges 10-year malmsey at $32/bottle before any discount.

Hey Moses,

What kind of price is the 1968 D'Oliveira going for in your neck of the woods? I wouldn't mind picking some up myself...

I bought it in 2011, but it went on the small remains of my 2010 wine-budget, so I guess it counts as my best purchasing coup for 2010:

1 bottle of 1969 Sercial Miles Madeira for 8,50 Euros

I got in on German ebay, where the selling of alcohol is NOT forbidden, like in many states of the U.S. A lot of people must have taken a nap and so I got lucky... [yahoo.gif]

~75% discount is nothing to sneer at. It's the quality of the coup that counts.
