1983 Manuel Eugenio Fernandes (MEF) Verdelho Seixal

Post by Eric Ifune »

Dark amber gold with a greenish meniscus.
Powerful aromas of caramel, limes, tangerines.
Rich on the palate. Toffee and citrus flavors. Piercing acidity.
Nice finish. Great balance. Not at all austere like the Over 40 year old blends. This is rich and concentrated with a lot of fruit.
94 points.

Was this an auction pick-up Eric or maybe from the island?

Nice note, this Verdelho typically shows some penetrating acidity too. I am right with you Eric, on score and impressions.

Daniel, this was purchased on the island and is not available commercially elsewhere.

Yes, bought from the family.
This has huge acidity like the Over 40 year old blends, but has much more generous fruit. I love them both, but different styles.

I have not opened mine yet.

It was tasting very good this year. Steve, you will certainly get your chance in 2017!

I've now opened my bottle and finished it too. I found this to be extremely balanced and seemingly much older than its actual age. A noticeable difference from many times trying it from cask.
