2015 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett--unique!

Post by John Trombley »

2015 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett (Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer), AP 3; nearly water-white with a hint of pale gold. Though having a hint of washed color, it shows very delicately against white paper trans-illumination; and thin particulate curlicues of light cork(?) helices are seen, probably Coravin cores. Lots of pale melon, spritz, and a punchy delicate minerality, also giving away much of what went into its loveliness and foaminess from the proteins. About as vivid as can be had without going over the top. Touchy but vivid.

Creaminess and spearmint flower, with the lovely foam holding out, but still more tickly lees and so forth. Nutmeg is there, too, and bringing out what might be like a little delicate fruit. Quite vivid and crisp, probably more like a jagged Spätlese needing some rough edges of the fingernails filed some. Quite dry for type and coming on strong; firm late harvest--lemony loveliness, when I come back for a second later tasting. It's quite unique and lime-vivid. Power needing taming in the cellar. Those who think this a 'typical' Mosel Kabinett have their palates tuned differently. It's really sui generis. 93/100.

If you serve it now, start it out at refrigerator, not cellar, temperature to tame it a bit. This will be long-lasting and should not be drunk up too young. 2021-2032 and on.
