We just watched that one too. It was quite good, as was a lengthy article I read in the New York Times about that incident years ago.

I went to the cinema for the first time in a long time last weekend to watch The Theory of Everything.

Not only was this a fascinating insight into the life of Stephen Hawking the acting was phenomenally good from both of the lead characters. Oscar will surely be coming their way later this year.

A must see.

Recently watched In a World, an indie movie. Very well done with great character development. It's about voice over specialists in Hollywood.

Roy Hersh wrote:EVERYBODY go see the movie BOYHOOD. I can't wait to see any flick that can top this one in 2014, no less released in the dry spell that is normally summer at the movies.
We watched Boyhood last night, and it is certainly is a worthwhile movie, and I think it should get some awards just for putting together that film--an impressive piece of moviemaking. More entertaining, we recently watched The Grand Budapest Hotel. This reminded me a bit of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and I wasn't a bit surprised to learn they were both by the same director, Wes Anderson. If you liked Aquatic, you should definitely like The Grand Budapest Hotel. If you thought Aquatic was interesting but just too slow and too long between the humor, I think you'll find the Hotel a fair bit funnier. If you didn't like Aquatic at all, then you should probably skip the Hotel too.

Obviously, most of you probably have already formed an opinion on it, but Game of Thrones is back and is my fav HBO series ever. That's saying something, considering that I've loved the Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire.

Looking for a new series to pick up on. Just watched House of Cards (3 seasons) and am still involved in The Americans. A friend recommended, Sons of Anarchy, but after watching 3/4 of the first show I was bored and felt it ridiculous. So last night, I started to watch one that my wife said was really good: Mad Men, about advertising. I saw two epis and so far it is pretty engaging. If that had failed, I would've tried Game of Thrones, but I think I am going to really like the nostalgic side of Mad Men. We'll see.

Surprised how good this was:

2001 film: BLOW with Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz and Franka Potente. About drug smuggling from Mexico (weed) and later, Colombia (cocaine) and the highs and lows of the job and trying to remain a family man and also trying to strengthen his relationship with his parents. Depp was great. Loaded with character actors you will recognize. Cruz is in her ultimate prime!

EVEREST the movie. Took the family to see it tonight. Riveting, but terribly sad. Had everyone on the edge of their seats. Exc. acting and while there assuredly were moments added in for dramatic effect, overall it was a hard hitting flick that did justice to the original story. The fact that people are still willing to risk their lives in hopes of summiting, speaks volumes about the human spirit ... which is depicted well here. One can't help but imagine why Rob Hall would allow Doug to summit. The majority of the outcome would've changed if he had just stuck to the word, "No!"

Spotlight was incredibly intense. Likely the Best Pic of 2015, at least so far.

Here is a mini-review I wrote earlier tonight:

SPOTLIGHT … the movie. This horrific true story of child abuse and sexual molestation perpetrated by Catholic priests; hermetically sealed and covered up for decades by the Catholic Archdiocese, is painful to watch. The film focuses on the Boston Globe’s “Spotlight Team” of investigative reporters (incredibly adept acting here) who slowly unravel the layers of a rotten onion, over the course of more than a year. Not looking for a “gotcha” to enhance their paper’s circulation, the slow and unwavering diligence of this team, intent on finding and presenting the truth, encounters a supremely powerful and nearly invisible conspiracy to conceal their findings. The reporters eventually discover the largesse of the crime, and surreal number of victims whose lives and faith have been forever spoiled by the depravity and lies of their religious leaders. What first appeared to be a local scandal, quickly devolved disgracefully across the U.S., until proven to be an unfathomable worldwide nightmare. Not for the faint of heart, this intense film will ring the bell early and often during Awards season.

I am walking distance from the Boston Archdiocese and this whole thing was such a big and horrible deal. I can't imagine the Lord will be welcoming many from the Archdiocese to his flock in the afterlife. The complicity in it all is just disgusting.

Trumbo - an "important" film in that it shows what took place in the 1950s with blacklisting of actors and writers, et al. I realize it has been around a while, but very good if/when it comes to Netflix, Hulu or On Demand.

Brooklyn - given what's going on with immigration policy discussions in the USA, this was very poignant and although I walked in not knowing anything about this film whatsoever, I thought it was fabulous and the best love story on screen (not that I see many of them) since The Notebook.

The BIg Short was excellent. I've now seen 8 of 10 of the movies nominated for Best Picture. Tonight's flick was The Revenant and it certainly deserves to be in the top 10. Loved it, which is not easy to say about a movie such as this. I knew nothing going in and it was captivating from start to finish.

Inarritu is the exact kind of crazy I like in a director. His insistence to film a lot of that movie in the cold hinterlands of Canada brought it to life in a way great acting and plot alone never could. Excellent film.

Agree, some of the long shots of the prarie and forested areas and rivers that ran beside them was like having natural characters as part of the script.

Eddie the Eagle. I thought it was going to be more of a comedy. This bio-pic is well worth watching, especially if you are into skiing or have an easy time understanding British. [foilhat.gif]
