Krohn 30 Year Old Tawny
Just grabbed a case at Premier Cru as it was on sale for $32.49 / bottle which seemed pretty good for a thirty year old bottle of anything, no less a fine Tawny with the breeding of Krohn.

How much longer will the Krohn label be available? Until all the existing stocks are gone?

My understanding, and it could have changed since I heard, was they were still going to keep the brand going.Eric Ifune wrote:How much longer will the Krohn label be available? Until all the existing stocks are gone?

Then why does it seem like they are DUMPING the 30 year old at the price of a 10 year old or 20 at best? I was thrilled to get a case at this price, but wondered why so inexpensive for a 2013 bottling.

I'm guessing they brought it in gray market. They've had it for a bit as I've seen it on their website prior to the sale.Roy Hersh wrote:Then why does it seem like they are DUMPING the 30 year old at the price of a 10 year old or 20 at best? A guess at best.
The USA mporter is listed on the back label.

Well, that doesn't surprise me either. Some friends in the trade scratch their heads as there is no way they are buying some of the wines for what they end up selling them for. Maybe just clear it out to make room???? No idea.Roy Hersh wrote:A guess at best.

Re: Krohn 30 Year Old Tawny
Just thought of something. Who's importing Krohn's now? Has it changed to Kobrand or is it still their old importer Megawine? If if changed to Kobrand then I could see the latter dumping what they had remaining in stock for cheap to clear it out, as what happened with the 2003 Quinta do Noval VP when they changed importers and it got dumped for around $40 bottle.Andy Velebil wrote:Well, that doesn't surprise me either. Megawine was on the back label of this 2013 bottling. Not sure if Kobrand is in play with this yet. Typically, the old importers will sell remaining stock at cost, to the new importer; but it would also certainly make sense that they try to sell it for more than cost, first. Who knows?

That would depend on how happy they are to lose the account. As what happened to Noval, I suspect they weren't too happy losing the account as they dumped the wine into the market at a crazy cheap price. Something I've seen happen to many a dry wine from various regions over the years. That isn't good for a producer to see their product price dumped like that. Buyers aren't to thrilled to see what they just bought is now 1/2 that price and probably won't buy again as result. Most having no idea what is going on behind the scene.Roy Hersh wrote:Megawine was on the back label of this 2013 bottling. Not sure if Kobrand is in play with this yet. Hey, I liked that particular dump!Andy Velebil wrote:Buyers aren't to thrilled to see what they just bought is now 1/2 that price and probably won't buy again as result. Most having no idea what is going on behind the scene.
I got a case of 2003 Noval for $38/bottle, then another 4 accidentally (it's a story that's told here somewhere) for $60 total, then another 2 for $30 each. That particular episode happened right after I first tried the 2003 Noval and just loved it, so it was perfect timing!

Yeah, but you didn't buy a case of it before for $70-ish per either LOLGlenn E. wrote:Hey, I liked that particular dump!Andy Velebil wrote:Buyers aren't to thrilled to see what they just bought is now 1/2 that price and probably won't buy again as result.
