Graham's Single Harvest Tawny 1961

The Symington Family and Graham's are very pleased to announce the release of the Graham's 1961 Single Harvest Tawny Port. This is a luxury special edition bottling: there are only three casks of this wine, each of which will yield only 712 bottles. Every bottle will be numbered by hand, and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Graham's winemaker, Charles Symington.

Charles describes the wine as having "on the nose an explosion of of mulitple aromas, a combination of caramel, nuts, hints of vanilla and cigar box. Massively concentrated in the mouth, these wines have a complex palate revealing honeycomb, exotic spices and crystallised orange peel flavours. The richness is balanced by a firm and refreshing acidity which gives the wine a perfect balance and structure, leading to an endless finish."

The wine is now available in Portugal (including at our Lodge in Gaia), Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the UK.

This is on sale at Berry Brothers at £210 per bottle.

I'm not so sure about the name change. I know that Tom really doesn't like the term "Colheita" but at least here in the US that's the known and understood term. Adding "Single Harvest Tawny" to the label just confuses things. And it really seems like "Colheita" would work better in Portugal, which is one of the markets in which this Port is being released.

(Yes, "Colheita" is still on the label as required by the IVDP, it's just hidden down in the fine print at the bottom.)

I'd love to get my hands on a bottle of this, though!

Of course it comes just in time for those who will turn 50. Brilliant!

Glenn, if you didn't know this, once upon a time ... the British would NEVER dare use the term Colheita on any bottling. The Portuguese believed it was their reluctance to use a Portuguese term on the label. Whether that is true or not ... nobody knows and certainly none of the British Port houses would ever admit to that practice. Nonetheless, I am in full agreement that it is the proper term and obviously the exact category fitting for this bottling. Look at how many other ways the Brits used to label their Colheitas w/out having to incorporate that specific term. This is nothing against the SFE, because they are just one of MANY that followed that old practice back in the day. Nowadays, typically you can find plenty who have "crossed the line."
