Online shopping - what and from where?

Post by Markus A »

Here it goes.

I am looking for information about online shops that have been proven to be reliable. My interest is in shops that deliver to Finland, have good selection, reasonable shipping costs and time and payment can be done by credit card (bank transfer is possible but not preferred). Usually all the webshops that deliver to Finland will also deliver to most other European countries so this thread can have recommendations from other shops too since I think this topic probably interests many of us.

At the moment I have only 2 x Smith Woodhouse '03 LBV, 2 x Kopke '11 VP and 3 x Quinta Vale D. Maria '11 VP.

My plan is to mainly buy VPs from the '80s and maybe a few from the '90s. Been reading from here and there so my shopping list looks something like this (at least these are the ones I would like to get):

Smith Woodhouse '77 VP

Dow's '80 VP
Dow's '85 VP
Dow's Quinta Senhora da Ribeira '98 SQVP
Dow's Quinta do Bomfim '05 SQVP

Gould Campbell '80 VP

Graham's '83 VP
Graham's '85 VP

Calem '85 VP

Fonseca '85 VP (this is a must after reading this forum)

Martinez '85 VP
Martinez '94 VP

Quinta de La Rosa Vale do Inferno '99 VP

Croft '03 VP

Quinta do Noval '03 VP

Please comment if you think some of those are not worth to buy or you think I should look for something else. Also I don't plan on getting them all right away. I know this is almost the same kind of thread as the one Thomas V started but maybe we can focus more on where to buy rather than what to buy.

And now the shops. I found some that seem suitable when I was looking for prices of the bottles on my list. Any and all information about them is greatly appreciated! And please tell if you know others.

Cave du Connaisseur https://www.caduco.de/

Portugal Vineyards https://www.portugalvineyards.com/en/

(Mods please delete the links if they are not allowed)

Thank you in advance for all the help and sorry for such a long post!

While I can't help with shops as I don't live in Europe, I'd buy any of those listed without issue. The exception would be the de la Rosa, which I'd skip.

I received an order from Nickolls and Perks not long ago. The price was very good, the bottle arrived in perfect shape and shipping/customs was reasonable. I would not hesitate to recommend them or order again, at least for shipping to the USA.

If something is only or most inexpensively available from the UK, I wonder if you should buy those sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the replies!

Andy, thanks for the confirmation that the ones I have chosen are good options and actually the de La Rosa along with the Senhora da Ribeira and the Croft are in the list because they were mentioned in a "1001 wines you must try before you die" book that I read. So those don't have the highest priority on my list. Those were cheaper than most others mentioned so I thought why not try them. The de la Rosa I have found for 50$, the Senhora da Ribeira for 53$ and the Croft for 65$.

Edward, thanks for the info about Nickolls and Perks. Good to know at least one of those is trustworthy. I will be making an order soon.

Eric, after my searches it does seem that the UK is the best place to order port (at least for me) at the moment and like you said it's probably better to order sooner rather than later.

So, it seems no one else has ordered port from online shops.

Since it has not been mentioned yet I can confirm https://www.vinhodoporto.nl/
Fast and secure delivery. Thanks Jasper!

I have ordered from a bunch in mainland Europe. I'll add my take later this week, but also realize that people, if they stumble on a nice little vendor with good prices, do not want to let that become public knowledge. Then the vendor will either sell out or increase prices. So that is why sometimes topics like these are met by silence. I have seen it multiple times where someone ask for advice where to buy port and none is given. ( I don't mean FTLOP in this instance specifically)

Is that so :?:

I'll be glad to give you some names from webshops I've bought from, all very satisfactory. I'm not sure if they deliver to Finland or accept creditcards, but you could take a look on there websites.

Ton Overmars in Amsterdam NL (Very reliable and does have a lot and good pqr)
Belgiumwinewatchers in Antwerp Belgium (you'll have to check now and then, have had some real bargains there)
Scholzen-Weinpalais in Cologne Germany (changes often)
Sauter in Maastricht NL (Croft 2003 + 2005 = delicious)
Pavie in Den-Haag NL
Gouden Glas in Utrecht NL
Flesjewijn in Oudenbosch NL
Colaris in Weert NL
Belvini in Radeberg Germany

Good luck and have fun!

Thank you very much Monique!

I will definitely have to check those. And even if they don't deliver to Finland someone else may find them useful.

I have purchased from both Nickolls and from Vintagewineandport - both have given me consistently great service.

There are also the leading London wine merchants Berry Brothers & Rudd, Justerini & Brooks and Corney & Barrow. They are not the cheapest of sources but all three are used to shipping overseas and give very good levels of service.
