Aroma Kits

Post by Anthony M »

I've been checking out aroma kits to improve my recall and recognition of the different aromas in port wines.

Three questions:
1) Which set do you think is best for port? (see list below)
2) Aromaster allows you to make a bespoke kit of 24 aromas from a selection of 100. Which ones would you choose? (note: only select from the available aromas on their website).
3) Which essential port aromas are missing from the 100?

Here's my selection:
FRUIT:
1) Blackcurrant
2) Blackberry
3) Cherry
4) Plum
5) Raspberry
6) Prune
7) Dried fig
8) Dried apricot
9) Strawberry

FLORAL
10) Violet
11) Geranium
12) Rose

SPICE & VEGETAL
13) Mint
14) Eucalyptus
15) Liquorice
16) Cinnamon
17) Cedar
18) Pine
19) Black pepper

PHENOLIC
20) Medicinal
21) Tar

MISC
22) Flint
23) Caramel
24) Chocolate

In case you were wondering what esteva (rock rose) smells like, then you can buy small samples of pure oil extracted from flowers & leaves here:

https://www.lenez.com - Le Nez Du Vin 54 looks good, but Le Nez Du Whisky 54 has a some port aromas missing from the former.
