Top 5 Suggestions?

Post by Daniel Fraley »

Hi All, I've recently started exploring (and loving!) Portuguese wine, but would love to get some suggestions from more seasoned members.

1. Do you have recommendations on where to buy online? Typically my local wine stores only carry 4-5 different vineyards/bottles
2. Can you share a top 5 you've consumed recently that I could seek out?

Thanks!
Daniel

Can't recommend anywhere online, but many of can make plenty of suggestions.

-What price point?
-Old world, new world style preference?
-Red or White?
-Any particular region of Portugal?

You've kept your location private, which throws a kink into the answer for that question. First, shipping to your location make be difficult or illegal. Second, a store in your not-quite-local area or state might exist. (I can think of several stores I've bought from online that ship to Colorado, but will ship locally for free or cheap.)

In the spirit of our guest from Ramos Pinto... Have you tried any of the Duas Quintas red wines? There is 3 different levels from $12 to $40ish and all excel at their price point. Powerful wines.

That does give you a lot of options. I've bought from a number of NJ stores, with Gary's (Wine & Marketplace) coming to mind most recently. Long ago I bought from Wine Chateau, and Wine Library is also an option, although that in my experience is less for browsing and more for special deals that come along. In NYC I bought a bunch from Cabrini a while back. Zachy's might be worth perusing, but their retail prices are fairly high. You might want to follow WTSO.com. You will have to sift/ignore a lot of e-mails, but they've had some Portuguese wines before, like Quinta do Crasto.
