Multi: 1982 Quinta da Terra Feita & 1982 Quinta do Cruzeiro Por

Post by Ronald Wortel »

Thanks to Steven for bringing these bottles.

Quinta do Cruzeiro (Fonseca) and Quinta da Terra Feita (Taylor) are situated next to each other on the river Pinhao. Very interesting to taste these two side by side, to see how much difference there can be between two wines that are produced virtually on the same spot.

Quinta do Cruzeiro 1982
Fonseca hardly ever releases port from this quinta as a single quinta VP.
The colour is rather pale, brownish red, clearly aged. Light fruit on the nose, caramel and raisins. Nose is somewhat alcoholic. Light bodied on the palate with sweet strawberries and other light red fruit. A bit smoky and some tobacco. Initially a bit hot, but that blows off with air. A figgy, sweet finish with caramel and some bitterness. All in all a nice and fruity, if rather simple port, that has hardly any noticeably tannins left. Peak drinking. 86 points.

Quinta da Terra Feita 1982
More concentrated, reddish colour than the Cruzeiro. Very fresh on the nose, with dark cherries, dark chocolate, and meaty aromas. Very full.
Firm tasting, well bodied, dark and spicy. Again dark cherries and chocolate. Good freshness and good grip. Medium sweet. A smack-in-your-face style, or you could say, a port with an edge. Initially this is also a bit hot, but that blows off as well. Also gains more fruit with air. This port has plenty of potential to age further, but is very enjoyable now as well. 90 points.
