Mixed drink!

Ok so I just wrote an article on wine based mixed drinks, inspired by the incredible heat here in Madrid. One dirnk of which I mentioned was Tawny and Tonic. I haven't had one in a while and I kinda have a hankering after writing about it. So I was thinking, taking that we are using the cheap stuff here, does anyone else enjoy this lower alcohol alternative on a hot day? Or are there other port wine based drinks that I don't know about? Sacrilege? I love port but when it gets hot like it is here in Madrid, you need a low alcohol alternative to big wines...

I love White Port with Tonic, but never tried Tawny in the mix...come to think of it, I could be quite tasty...I'll give this a try in the near future!

A mixture that I find works very well is half a glass of VP topped up with another half glass of VP 8) - similar advice available for Tawny, Colheita and LBV on request :P

A little late chiming in on this post, but I have to say, I found the Port sangria I made this past weekend quite refreshing and tasty. I was better the night before when I made it so it wasn't as lively when we had it the next afternoon.

The recipe called for 3 bottles of white wine. I elected to use one bottle of white port, and in keeping with the Portugese theme, I used two bottles of vinho verde. I'd be happy to post the recipe if you're interested.

One note though...it has more of a kick than a traditional sangria, so if you're not planning on going anywhere, drink up. :winebath:

Hello,

I just recently (today) came across this forum and I'm happy I found it. I've just started looking into port so this looks like a great place to learn. I'm a chemist turned bartender and have been a contributing author for a couple of books and magazines including Mixology: The Journal of the American Cocktail. I also have a website dedicated to spirits, cocktails and bartending (see signature).

Anyway, on the topic of mixed drinks, a good one to try with port is called the Broken Spur Cocktail. It is as follows:

1.5 oz Port (Tawny)
0.75 oz Sweet Vermouth
1/4 tsp Triple Sec (Cointreau)

Stir with ice, garnish with a lemon twist and enjoy.

Darcy,

Welcome aboard. Nice to have you with us. Thanks for that cocktail recipe with the Port. I am not a big Vermouth lover but the combo does sound intriguing. Thanks. I hope you will stop back here on occasion and enjoy!
