An `88 Bomfim that turned out to be corked.

Post by Bob Parsons Alberta »

First of all it is great to be back here, having lost all my sign in details earlier this year!! But it is now winter port drinking weather up here in Alberta!!
Strange thing last week, opened a half Bomfim. All seemed OK on opening but thought a tad spirity and lacking in fruit. Took in to my pals at DeVines downtown. "Try this"I said...."It`s corked Bob" they said. Never thought this on opening and certainly did not find finish blemished either. I have a good nose and would have noticed straight away on opening.

Comments welcome.

Sounds like a mis-diagnosis of bottle stink.

How long had the bottle been decanted before they made their verdict?

Could have been bottle stink, or just a slight case of TCA, which was not readily noticable on opening. However, TCA will get worse with more air exposure, so it is possible your friends got a stronger dose when they tried it.

Bob,

Welcome back.

The flatness you describe and the lack of fruit could certainly indicate TCA taint rather than bottle stink. The lack of fruit smell and taste in a wine that I know well is the best indicator that I can pick up to alert me to possible corking of a bottle - I'm not that great at tasting the taint directly.
