Dec 2nd SF port tasting

Post by Jay Powers »

The Wine Club, 953 Harrison St, San Francisco, will be having a port tasting on December 2nd, 1-5 PM. Their phone is 800-966-7835

The Wine Club is a nice little retail store in SF (they also have a store in the LA area somewhere), and they had a nice selection of younger vintage ports last time I was there. I have no idea what's on the menu for this tasting. Price for the tasting is $40.

I'm posting this because this kind of tasting is rare to find in the Bay Area, and is actually the first one I have heard of before it was 6-months out of date.

This past weekend, K&L, another Bay Area merchant had a Bordeaux tasting for $20, with 3 2003 (including my first First Growth, Ch. Margaux), followed by 5 2004's, a 1986 (Haut Bages Liberal) and then a 2002 De Fargues Sauternes. I have been getting more into Sauternes (and Tokaji) lately, but this one was not so impressive, and the only thing I remember about it was sweetness....it seemed to have not much going for it beyond that. I did not purchase any of the wines (that Margaux was $399/bottle...just think what kind of port you could get for that!), but bought a single older bottle of Leoville Barton (which was one of the 2004's we tried).

I did not take extensive notes, but the Margaux was the best, followed by the Leoville Barton, at least to my pallet. What surprized me most was how approchable the 2003 Margaux was now, much more so than all of the others other than the 86.

Looks like a fun tasting, with tons of tannins for you. Let us know how it goes, and wish I was up there to join you.
