What are you drinking tonight?

Post by Roy Hersh »

This is probably the ONLY time that I'll provide a forum for folks to discuss their wines Port and or others ... that they will be opening (or after the fact) for their New Years Eve celebrations.

Enjoy your celebrations and please be safe in getting home tonight!

With 2007 just a few hours away for some of our friends here ... I hope your 2007 will be filled with the best of health and a wide variety of new opPORTunities!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun New Years :drunk:

As for me, just got home from a 13 hour shift dealing with all of you rowdy party goers  so tonight is one of my favorite mixed drinks, a Long Island Ice Tea (Gin, Tequila, vodka, rum, triple sec, sweet and sour, and a dash of Coke). Made by Quinta do Velebil  Only one though, gotta get up at 0430 for work again.

Got up at the crack of noon...

Hair of the dog...

Still rough...

Oh well, every year the same...

Went out with Barbara to a restaurant only to discover that they've taken the 20 year old Taylor off their list and have nothing to replace it--grrr--so I drank a little Maker's Mark, the only spirit that seemed worthwhile at the bar. With dinner had a 2005 Hangtime Pinot Noir Edna Valley--good with food, quality very good maybe, no qpr at the restaurant price.

At home I still have a few sips of 1992 Fonseca VP to go for, and I've been conducting a re-barrelling experiment with some quite old James Beam straight bourbon, so I have some of that out, mostly to check on it and write a tasting note. Coming along well.

For me it was all portuguese. Some Petrus and DRC for Christmass but as New year eve is with friends that don't really enjoy wine I brought Sandeman LBV 99 that was just marvellousy full of jammy black cherries, must buy! Also a Quinta do Vallado Reserva 2004, a bit young, tannins were hard but overall everything should come in time to give us a very pleasant wine.

For me the New Years eve was 30 year Ramos Pinto Tawny, a delightfully bright tasting and fresh tawny. :D Prior to the port it was Samual Smiths Winter Welcome Ale, perfect for sitting around the fireplace if its too early for port yet. Dinner may have been Totinos pizza rolls :?

For X-mas eve it was grilled lamb with Bordeaux (Connetable Talbot 1996, Langoa Barton 1975, and Lascombes 1975) followed by a perfect bottle of Warres 1970 VP at my Father in Law's house. It almost made me cry to see the original price tags on his bottles (~7-9$ US!!!). Despite my many rants about the high prices of Bordeaux, this dinner led me to purchase several cases of 2003 and 2004 Bordeaux when I returned home  Hopefully I will live long enough to host a similar dinner with these wines :D

The next day it was 4 champagnes and California sparkling wines for apertifs, followed by numerous French whites and NZ Souv. Blanc with a fresh crab dinner, followed by a Warres vertical starting with the 1995 LBV, then on to the 20 year Tawny (not the Otima, the good stuff), then a 77 VP, and a fresh bottle of the 70 VP. Fortunately for me and any drivers foolish enough to be out, we were staying at my Father in Laws' house so did not need to drive home!

Luc,

Welcome to the site. What a great wine to post about as your first post on the forum.

A wine I've never tried, good to know that you enjoyed it.
